Dear Members:

This is the sixteenth edition of our annual newsletter. This letter comes out twice a year in the Spring and Fall and features our upcoming events, news about Competition Winners, Alumni and Teachers. We hope that this will be helpful and keep you up-to-date with our events.

COMPETITION NEWS

BROCHURES & WEBSITE: YPCNJ will no longer print season brochures or send out applications in mass mailings. All of the competition’s information, applications, etc. are available on our Website (www.youngpianist.org), which stays very current. Please consult the website for any questions that you might have. If you still have unanswered questions regarding our events, please E-mail us, which can be done by using the Contact Us link on our website. All of your concerns will be answered promptly. This is the most efficient way to contact our organization and receive information in the most timely fashion.

FUNDRAISING EVENT: Thank you to Brigitte Tang, who organized a special fundraiser at Lord & Taylor in October, 2007. This event raised money for YPCNJ scholarships. MEMBER NEWS

Lana Ivanov has been invited as a jury member for the LORENZO PEROSI International Competition in November, 2007. Christopher Kong was the Second Prizewinner in the 2007 ICA (International Concert Alliance) International Piano Solo Competition, New York City, June 2007. (This rank was not for his age group, rather entirely up to 18 years old). As one of top 3 winners overall, he performed Beethoven's Sonata in d minor, op. 31, no.2 “Tempest” and Debussy’s Toccata from Pour le Piano at the Winner's Recital, at the Symphony Space in New York City. He was also the Third place winner at the 2007 Connecticut International Young Artist Piano Competition in June 2007. As the Grand prizewinner of the Hershey Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, Christopher debuted as a soloist with the Symphony in December 2006. He was also soloist at " the FORUM" in Harrisburg, PA, in July 2007.

Yelena Ivanov’s Studio. Doris Lee just recently won first place in the solo division at the Ithaca Piano Competition at Ithaca College, New York, and was awarded $750 for grand prize. This past summer, Ms. Lee has attended the Shandelee Music Festival (Shandelee, New York), where she was accepted and awarded a scholarship. Ms. Lee performed at Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, Steinway Hall, and Yamaha Piano Salon in New York City, Jacob’s Music Center, Simon and Sarah Birnbaum Jewish Community Center, the Watchung Arts Center, the Presbyterian Church in Plainfield, Ithaca College’s Hockett Hall and Ford Hall, and St. Nicolò Auditorium in Chioggia, Italy. Annabell Suh, graduate of Pingrey High School, was a multiple prizewinner of Young Pianist Competition of New Jersey for the past 12 years. She also won the 2006 NJMTA scholarship award and the 2007 Marian Garcia Piano Competition (PA). She was accepted to Cornell University, where she is pursuing a double major, which includes piano performance.

Yelena Mamonova’s Studio: Ms. Mamonova joined the 2007 faculty of Festival “Musica in Laguna”, where she also served as a jury member for the Junior & Senior Divisions Solo & Concerto Competition. She also joined the 2007 faculty of the Shandelee Music Festival.

Julia Reina’s studio: Students performed a special Memorial Day recital. It was filled with 47 performances, solo and duet, of heartwarming patriotic music. It was held at the Eastern Star Nursing Home so the elderly could enjoy the famous music that they love. Residents and family and friends were treated to cookies and punch as a thank you from Eastern Star and this recital was televised by our local cablevision channel.

Lena Solaiman's studio: Lena Solaiman has given a successful piano recital in Edinburgh, Scotland on July 14, 2007. It is part of her missionary work sponsored by Edingburgh Chinese Evangelistic Church. Alex Zhang, Lena's proud student, has also won the Level 7 Gold Medal at the World Piano Competition in Cincinnati in July. He is subsequently invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in September, 07.

Anthony Strong will perform Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue with the Central Jersey Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Roger Briscoe, in a program of all-American classics of Barber, Copland and Gershwin, at Raritan Valley Community College's Nash Theatre next May 10.

ALUMNI NEWS

Alumni, Erica Liu, James Lin, Doris Lee, Kevin Lee, George Lykogiannis, Brendan Tang, Brianna Tang, Howard Wei & Allen Yueh attended the 2007 Festival “Musica in Laguna”. Erica Liu, James Lin, Doris Lee, Kevin Lee, Brianna Tang, Brendan Tang were winners in the Junior Division Concerto Competition and performed with Orchestra Sinfonica del Festival di Chioggia in concert. George Lykogiannis & Allen Yueh were winners of the Senior Division Concerto Competition and performed with Orchestra Sinfonica del Festival di Chioggia in concert. Kevin Lee was the First Prize winner of the Festival “Musica in Laguna” International Solo Competition (Junior Division Category A) and Allen Yueh was the First Prize winner of the Festival “Musica in Laguna” International Solo Competition (Junior Division Category B). George Lykogiannis was the Second Prize winner of the International Solo Competition (Senior Division). In addition to the cash award, Kevin & Allen also received a full scholarship awarded by the Festival to attend the 2008 program. All of the alumni performed several times on the Festival’s Concert Series in St. Nicolò Auditorium in Chioggia, VE Italy. Young Pianist Competition of New Jersey Page 6 Newsletter Fall 2007

Lisa Kong was a winner at the 2007 ICA International Piano Solo Competition, New York City, the 2007 Connecticut International Young Artist Piano Competition, and the 2007 West Chester University Piano Competition. She was also the Second Place winner, at the 2006 Maryland State Music Teacher's Association Piano Competition. Lisa was a featured Violin Soloist at "the FORUM", in Harrisburg PA, in July, 2007. JULY 2008 PROGRAM FOR THE FESTIVAL MUSICA IN LAGUNA, CORSI MUSICALI

Next festival dates are July 1 – 14, 2008. The available piano programs consist of Workshops, Concerto Competitions for Junior and Senior divisions. Participants in the Concerto program will have five private lessons, two of which will be accompanied by Orchestra Sinfonica del Festival di Chioggia. Winners of the Concerto Competitions will perform in concert with Orchestra Sinfonica del Festival di Chioggia

Festival Musica in Laguna will also hold an International Piano Solo Competition for Junior & Senior Divisions. Gold winners will receive cash awards and a full tuition scholarship to the 2008 Festival.
