Toby is, in his own words, '....nothing but a cliché - the puny, nerdy Asian guy who's top at school.' But all Toby's predictable normality changes when, in a moment of recklessness, he abandons his younger sister at a party leaving her in the capable hands of his best friend. 14 year old Rita is subsequently raped and the prime suspect is Toby's mate; but Rita won't talk to the family. Harbouring intense feelings of guilt and anger Toby sets out to confront Carl and uncharacteristically gets himself totally drunk before hand. The following day Carl is found unconscious and bleeding and Toby has no recollections of the previous night's events. Could he really be guilty of such a violent act? The Children's Literature Foundation of New Zealand has announced its list of Notable New Zealand Books 2002.

Ten books in four categories have been selected, from more than 115 books published during 2001.

The list of Notable Books was established three years ago to reflect the wide-ranging achievements of New Zealand authors and illustrators. It appears each year to coincide with the New Zealand Post Children's Book Festival and Book Awards.

The only major difference (basic criteria are excellence of writing, illustration, design and production) is that the CLF Notable Books list allows for the inclusion of anthologies.
