STEUBEN COUNTY RSVP Date: Thursday, January 23 Time: 12am-1pm Description: Steuben County RSVP would like to partner with Cornell Cooperative Extension’s (CCE) “One-on-One Financial Coaching Program” to host a lunch/informational session. CCE’s program is a free and confidential service for families or individuals who desire assistance with the management of their finances. Trained volunteers offer help in analyzing debt problems and give suggestions for a spending plan suited to the needs of the client. They utilize trained volunteer coaches (many of them RSVP volunteers) to provide this service. Volunteers, however, sometimes have to wait months after training to be matched with an individual or family requesting assistance. Our goal is to inform non-profit organizations such as Catholic Charities, ProAction, the Department of Social Services, Arbor Development, etc., about the availability of this free service for their respective clients. This would serve to broaden the number of potential families that could be served by this valuable program as well as keep the trained volunteers actively engaged. 4H SCHUYLER COUNTY/CORNELL COOPERATIVE EXTENSION Description: Schuyler County 4-H youth will join with community volunteers for a day of Service Learning in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and in partnership with Schuyler Outreach Food Pantry and the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). The day will involve a hands on workshop in Bread Making, followed by the donation of loaves of fresh, "home"-made bread to the food pantry. The event will encompass multiple layers of service. CCE staff and volunteers will teach the healthy, money-saving, and warming process of making bread from scratch to local youth and families. Participants will make one loaf to take home and one to donate to the food pantry, thus reaching out in service to the community. 4-H youth will learn about additional opportunities for service by interacting with RSVP volunteers as well. Our hope is that in addition to learning a new, important skill, youth will feel a sense of belonging and spirit of generosity that may spark a lifelong habit of service. This event will last for several hours and draw on many volunteers as we need time to make the bread as well as for rising and baking. During rising and baking times we will offer educational activities related to Dr. King, social justice, and the practice of non-violent conflict resolution appropriate for youth. Bread will be made in the health department approved kitchen at the Human Services Complex in Montour Falls, NY, and will thus be acceptable for donating. Contact: Erin Nyquist, [email protected]

YMCA OF BROOME COUNTY Description: The YMCA of Broome County strives to be welcoming and inviting to the community. We encourage health and wellness and we do not turn anyone away due in inability to pay. We are currently updating our Wellness Center with new and exciting cardio equipment. To further enhance the experience of members, guests and residents, we want to paint the walls in the Wellness Center. Currently, it is a harsh yellow color that is neither motivating nor inviting. The room has not been painted in several years and the walls are showing their age. With a new coat of paint, the Wellness Center will look new, clean, motivating and inviting. We want everyone to feel comfortable, at ease and free of stress so they can improve or maintain their health and fitness levels. Colors can enhance wellness and happiness as well as motivate one to exercise, be social and maintain overall well being. This project will give the Wellness Center an entirely new look that will benefit members, guests, residents and the community. Contact: Cathy Lipski, [email protected]

Volunteers will tell low-income area residents about the Ithaca Health Fund, which offers financial assistance and advocacy to help people pay for emergency medical and dental expenses. In addition, volunteers will highlight the Free Clinic services that are especially helpful for heart health which include blood pressure checks, acupuncture, nutrition consultations, quitting tobacco support, and more! OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH CLINIC CENTER OF THE SOUTHERN TIER Description: Dr. King, perhaps the ultimate 'volunteer,' was murdered in Memphis in 1968 while in support of a unionization drive of sanitation workers struggling for health and safety conditions, a living wage and 'dignity'. 45 years later workers are once again engaged in these same struggles. We would like to show the film At The River I Stand which we understand has never been shown in Broome County. At The River I Stand highlights an aspect of Dr. King’s life that has sadly taken a back seat in the struggle for social justice. We will offer the film and discussion to other venues throughout the 9 counties of our service. Contact: Rick Sprout, [email protected]
