Grand Challenges Summer Internships

Montefiore-Einstein Center for Bioethics

Summer Project Description: The Montefiore-Einstein Center for Bioethics is a multi-disciplinary resource for both Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and coordinates the bioethics activities of these institutions, including clinical ethics consultation, bioethics policy development, and bioethics education. We have a Master of Science in Bioethics, and continue with our long-standing year-long Certificate Program in Bioethics and the Medical Humanities. We sponsor two interns per summer to support the work of the Center for Bioethics. Interns may be undergraduates or medical or law students.

Internship Details

Intern role and responsibilities: The intern will serve as research assistant at the Montefiore-Einstein Center for Bioethics. The intern’s duties will include performing literature searches and retrieving and reviewing articles on specific topics in bioethics for the development of publications or curricula. Past interns have collaborated on peer reviewed bioethics publications and have written brief articles for our blog. Interns assist with various projects at the Center, for instance by working with our database of bioethics consultations and by helping maintain and contribute to the Center website and promotional materials. Research projects in which the intern might participate include: LGBT bioethics issues, ethics issues related to health policies for patients with dementia, end of life and surrogate decision making, patient capacity and treatment refusal, bioethics consultation quality and evaluation, and additional bioethics policy issues relevant to the work of the Center.

The intern will have the opportunity to join bioethics meetings that occur during the summer, such as our regular review of clinical consultations. There are also small group informal lunch meetings with senior faculty at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. These lively gatherings offer students an opportunity to learn about career choices and options from noteworthy faculty members with a wide range of interests.
