Student Exchange Program (Non-degree) of Graduate School of Law, Waseda University I. Procedure to Nominate Students for Admission and to Obtain Student Visas

1.Nomination by the Home Institution The home institution must select and nominate students to Graduate School of Law, Waseda University (hereinafter, GSLW) according to the provisions of the respective exchange agreement with Waseda University.

2.Required Documents for Nomination The home institution must submit to GSLW the following documents for the nominated students by May 10, 2016. The Japanese government requires these documents for the application for the immigration certificate, “Certificate of Eligibility.” Please note that nominees under exchange programs are exempted from application fee and tuition.

1) A letter of nomination from the Dean of a home institution addressed to the Dean of GSLW. This letter must include the names of nominees and their period of stay at Waseda University. 2) Completed application forms for admission, including a statement of academic interest and background of Japanese language and Japanese Law (the form is enclosed). in Japanese 3) A completed application form for the Certificate of Eligibility (the form is enclosed). 4) Official transcripts (original) of academic records and diplomas from postsecondary institution(s) in which an applicant is currently enrolled and was previously enrolled. in English or Japanese 5) A completed statement of source of funds (the form is enclosed). Please attach Banker's certificate of deposit or Letter of financial guarantees. (The bank balances or documents clarifying the source of the living expenses in Japan.) 6) Five Photos (4cm×3cm) including one on the application form. 7) A Xeroxed copy of an applicant’s passport (photo and personal information pages).

Acceptance of Nominations

A professor who is designated by an exchange student will examine his/her applications and other documents. It is understood that nominations by the home institution will be honored under normal circumstances as long as required documents are submitted by the due date. Following acceptance by the professor and recognition by the committee of GSLW, GSLW will send the home institution “Letter of Acceptance” of each student accepted and information about Waseda and related matters around late- June, 2016. The information includes: entry information, accommodations, etc. At the same time, GSLW will apply to the Tokyo Immigration Office for a “Certificate of Eligibility” of each student required to obtain a student visa.

4. Receipt of Visa Certificates

It takes about four to eight weeks for GSLW to receive a "Certificate of Eligibility" for each student from the Tokyo Immigration Office. Upon receiving the certificates, GSLW will forward them to the program coordinator of the home institution by express and registered airmail. GSLW expects to send these certificates in July 2016 under normal circumstances. The program coordinator is expected to maintain each student’s mailing address during vacation so that the “Certificate of Eligibility” will reach the student. Each student may apply for a student visa at a Japanese Consulate only with a "Certificate of Eligibility" and a valid passport.

*The amounts indicated are approximate fees in case students apply for the National Health Insurance Plan (Kokumin Kenkou Hoken) in Japan.

Academic Transcripts Most courses of GSLW are two-credit courses taught for fifteen weeks. Each class meets for 90 minutes once a week. GSLW will issue official transcripts of academic records during the stay if needed but it is available in late-September (the transcripts of spring semester) or in late-March (the transcripts of fall semester).
