Engaging Academics

Engaging Academics

Excellent instruction requires teachers to motivate and support all students in achieving mastery of rigorous academic content. Join facilitators Doug Lemov, Erica Woolway, Colleen Driggs, and Hillary Lewis to prepare to deliver excellent training on nine high-impact, high academic expectation techniques from Teach Like a Champion 2.0. This collection of techniques builds rigor and substance in teaching and helps teachers engage students positively in rigorous academic work.

The approaches profiled in this workshop are diverse–from the quiet reflection of Wait Time to the high energy of Call and Response. Many of the techniques address aspects of questioning and Checking for Understanding, one of the trickiest areas of teacher proficiency: How to engineer your classroom to expose student misunderstandings, how to get student responses “all the way right,” how to help students successfully expand upon their statements once they have answered correctly, how to break down challenging content to ensure mastery while students do as much of the cognitive work as possible, and how to transfer more and more of that work to students. This “hands-on” workshop provides instructional leaders with the tools to deliver high quality training and to drive results.

YOU WILL GAIN:

 An understanding of proven teaching skills that drive student achievement  Insights when describing the effective application of techniques by champion teachers  An understanding of the importance of practicing new techniques with teachers  A framework for what makes practice effective  Practice activities that will strengthen teachers’ capacity to apply effective techniques in their classrooms  The opportunity to plan how you will implement these techniques in your school's professional development program

WE WILL ANALYZE AND PRACTICE:

 Teach Like a Champion 2.0 techniques including Cold Call, Show Call, No Opt Out, Right is Right, Stretch It, Everybody Writes, Call and Response, Wait Time, Check for Understanding  Effective coaching during practice in order to help get teachers to mastery of the techniques.

YOU WILL RECEIVE:

Attendees will leave prepared with the video clips discussed at the workshop, as well as additional training materials, including:

 Full description of all techniques, methods, and practice activities covered in the training  Talking points for each video clip  Additional clips with complete talking points  Lesson plans for school-wide and individual PD activities to help leaders train teachers  Aligned coaching tools and other materials to maximize teacher development
