Sustainability Group Presentation Instructions

Name ______Group Topic______

For this presentation, you will work as a group and present the information you have assembled on your group topic. Each group will be responsible for clearly presenting the basic claims and textual and historical evidence found by all members during the research, reading, and writing process.  Your presentation should last approximately 15-20 minutes—no more.  All members must take part in the presentation, and the work should appear to be fairly evenly distributed.  Dress neatly and be sure to speak loudly and clearly while making eye contact around the room. (See you rubric for specifics on this.)  Even if one of your group members forgets something, do not talk over her/him. Instead, wait until the end and help him/her only if it is truly necessary to the overall understanding of the presentation.  Use tall, formal posture even when it is not your turn to present. If it is hard for you to stand the whole time, sit up straight in your chair rather than slumping as if you are not interested in your peers’ contributions. Refrain form leaning on the podium. It is acceptable to present as a panel using a front table or a row of desks if you prefer.  You must have a works cited page and all quoted or paraphrased material must be cited as if this were an essay. You are all responsible for making sure your group members do not accidentally plagiarize in their sections, so be sure to proof each other’s parts.  Be sure to have a quality visual aid that can easily be seen by all of the class from where you are presenting in order to help us follow your words.  Include us, your audience, in some brief activity, so we feel that we are a part of the action.  Making it fun is worth up to 10 bonus points. We’ll remember it better if it was fun!  You imagination is your only limiting factor for this presentation—Work hard & have fun!

Overall grading for this presentation will be as follows:  Group grade based on rubric ______/50  Individual grade based on rubric ______/50  Peer evaluations (from the one you fill out) ______/40  Peer evaluations (from your peers) ______/50  Total presentation points possible ______/190  Make it fun extra credit ______/10  Grand total ______

NOTE: On the day of your presentation, hand this and your rubric to me at the beginning of the presentation with your name on both. Then turn in your peer evaluation sheets at the end of the day after your presentation, so you can fill out the question about the actual presentation for each group member after you present. The rest of the evaluation should already be filled out when you arrive! Be thoughtful!

What goes into your presentation, anyway?  Begin with a brief, but informative, introduction to your topic that includes your thesis (central claim).  Include any relevant history, statistics, etc. that support your central claim.  Working from that central thesis and using scientific terminology, show us how and why your topic is important to the idea of Sustainability on our planet.  Your visual aid will be essential to keeping us involved and interested, so make it big & clear. Past classes have created 30 second “Truth Commercials” as their visual aid, for example.  Pay attention to who is doing what (or not) as you meet and prepare for your presentation, so you can thoughtfully and accurately complete your peer evaluations.  ASK if you have questions!
