 The main criteria for this award is OVERCOMING OBSTACLES

Each year the Monsignor Paul Baxter Memorial Foundation awards up to seven (7) scholarships valued at $1750 each, to college or university bound graduates of our secondary schools.

Only one application per secondary school should be forwarded to the Foundation for consideration.

The Foundation requests that candidates who are nominated by each school be recognized for their perseverance, faith and service to others.

The Msgr. Paul Baxter Memorial Scholarship is not primarily an award for outstanding academic achievement. It is the intention of the Foundation, in Msgr. Paul Baxter's memory, to recognize graduates who have distinguished themselves by “trying their best, keeping the faith and being kind to others.”

The Foundation thanks the Awards Committees of the Ottawa Catholic High Schools for helping to direct THE MSGR. PAUL BAXTER SCHOLARSHIP to the appropriate candidate in each high school.

SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY:  Each Ottawa Catholic High School may nominate one candidate.  The nominee must have applied, be accepted to, and attend a full-time college or university program in the year in which the scholarship is awarded.  Incomplete applications will not be considered by the Msgr. Paul Baxter Memorial Foundation Committee.

A complete application package consists of the following items: 1. The application form fully completed and signed 2. An up-to-date transcript of your academic record 3. A reflective essay by you (maximum 500 words, typewritten and double spaced) describing how you are a worthy representative of Msgr. Paul Baxter's legacy to Catholic students.

The awards committee will select one applicant to submit to the MSGR. Paul Baxter Memorial Foundation

BACKGROUND FOR THE NOMINEE:

Monsignor Paul Baxter (1934-1998) was ordained June 5th, 1959. Father Baxter spent many years teaching and coaching at St. Pius X and St. Paul High Schools, while serving in various parishes on the weekends. When Father Paul retired from teaching he became pastor at St. Patrick's Parish in Fallowfield, while continuing his dedication and service to Catholic schools.

In 1991, the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association recognized his outstanding contribution to Catholic education by presenting him with the Bishop Redding Award. In 1996, Pope John Paul II elevated Father Paul to Monsignor Paul.

Monsignor Paul Baxter was recognized by his students and his parishioners as an intense teacher, a humble priest and kind person.

Frequently his lessons and his homilies ended with this exhortation: “Try your best, keep the faith, be kind to one another.” This is Msgr. Paul Baxter's legacy to thousands of Catholic students in Ottawa-Carleton. You are a nominee for a scholarship awarded in tribute to this legacy.
