MHS Physics Yawn “The Great Cardboard Boat Challenge” Wednesday, May 17, 2017

The Challenge…

You and/or your team must design and build a corrugated cardboard boat, and paddle your vessel two lengths across the short length of the Magnolia High School Natatorium pool. Each team must name their vessel, and designate a Captain and a First Mate. You may work in teams with a maximum number of four. All team members must be in the same class period. The challenge combines skill, strategy, ingenuity, and teamwork!

The Rules…

- Your boat must be made of Cardboard with Duct Tape on the joints ONLY!! - Do not use excessive amounts of duct tape. (Teacher’s discretion as to what is excessive) - Cardboard cannot be sealed or waterproofed with any paint, sealants, epoxies, markers, waxes, etc. - It must be corrugated cardboard only. No other materials are allowed for the boat structure or to assist in flotation. - Duct Tape may be of varying colors for creativity but must have come manufactured in that color. - Boats should be designed to race with your entire crew in the vessel. - Your boat must travel two full short-lengths of the MHS Natatorium pool. - The boat must fit through a double door. The boat must come assembled. - The boat must remain intact for the two full length trips in the pool with team members aboard to earn full performance credit. - Oars may be used for propelling the boat

Make your vessels awesome and cool! Details of coolness and creativity include: -ship design -creative use of materials -theme -costumes (not necessary) -enthusiasm/showmanship -However, paint may not be used.

Grading Outline: One Major Exam grade!

1) Performance: Up to 60 points given for maximum distance (2 laps) 2) Design: Up to 10 points (Due Thursday, May 5th in class. Late designs will not be accepted.) 3) Creativity/Theme: Up to 10 points (Boats and will be awarded points based on aesthetics) 4) Calculations: Up to 10 points (Buoyancy calculations will be done for each boat after the regatta) 5) Cleanup Assistance: Up to 10 points (Members of each team will participate in cleanup!)
