Safe Work Method Statement Organisation: Sample Task: Lawn mowing Task objective: To safely cut grass Hazards: Exposed moving parts with the potential to cause harm through cutting, shearing or crushing injuries, fuel hazards, exposure to noise, exposure to ultraviolet radiation, manual handling injuries and inhalation of exhaust fumes.
Tools and PPE:
Gloves Hearing protection
Eye protection Appropriate clothing
Appropriate footwear Hat and sunscreen Training and instruction: Manual handling Correct use of PPE Hearing protection UV protection Steps Prior to procedure: . Clear area to be mown of debris such as rocks, stones, sticks or other objects that may become projectiles. . Follow correct procedures in relation to fuelling lawnmower. . Inspect blades, blade bolts and cutter assembly to ensure they are not worn or damaged. . Wear appropriate PPE and apply sunscreen.
During procedure: Never place hands anywhere near the blades when it is running (i.e. when attaching guards etc). Never lift or carry the mower while the engine is running. Never cut grass by pulling the mower towards you. Mow across the face of a slope, never up and down. Stop the engine before pushing mower across gravel drives, walkways/footpaths or roads. Ensure mower is idling prior to removing the catch. Turn off lawn mower prior to refuelling. Refuel only in well-ventilated area away from ignition source.
