1 PURPOSE

i. The purpose of this procedure is to guarantee a safe RSS Lift Up and Lift Down.

2 CONSTRAINTS AND WARNINGS

ii. These procedures can result in serious injuries or damages to equipment if the steps in the procedures are not followed.

3 PROCEDURE

3.1 RSS Lift Up

a. Insert at least guider pins of different lengths on the outer bolt holes on the rho ring. Place them near positions where personnel will be standing when RSS is lowered.

b. After rho ring preparation rotate the structure to 60 degrees.

c. RSS must be on the Dolly with the rotation axis of the dolly along the 3-6 o’clock feet line.

d. Remove any optical components necessary for the lift.

e. Remove PSC1 box and the insertion pneumatic for Etalon 1. (furthest from camera)

f. Place webbing straps under 2 and 10 o’clock feet as described in the RSS lift down procedure.

g. Attach the block and tackle to spreader bar.

h. Manoeuvre the spreader bar over RSS and hook the other ends of straps onto the spreader bar.

i. Attach a strap to the 6 o’clock position on I beam and connect the other end of the strap to the block and tackle.

j. Attach long (30m) guide ropes to the 3 and 9 o’clock feet for rotation stabilization.

k. Take up slack in webbing straps and block and tackle with the dome crane with RSS still attached to the dolly.

l. Remove non-rotation strut (Steel u-beam with bolt top and bottom) from dolly so it can rotate about bearings.

m. Release block and tackle until the dolly triangle is 30mm from base of the dolly. (this will set the angle to 36 deg)

n. Remove the bolts holding RSS to its dolly.

o. Lift RSS through the first floor hatch. Note- It will need to be pulled outwards to fit past the inside of the hatch.

p. Lift RSS up to dome height and rotate dome away from 60 degrees of the maintenance position.

q. Rotate the structure to the maintenance position.

r. Rotate the dome with RSS over payload.

s. Slowly lower RSS over guide pins.

t. Lower RSS onto the rho ring.

u. Ensure that the 20mm alignment pins at the 3 and 6 o’clock positions insert properly into feet and that the RSS is flat on Rho Ring.

v. Bolt RSS down with bolts and belville washers.

w. Remove the guider pins.

x. Remove the rigging.

y. Reconnect the cabling.

3.2 RSS Lift Down

1. With the structure at the maintenance position, remove the Etalons, Detector and any Magazines that are easily accessible.

2. Detach all cables and hoses that connect RSS to the telescope.

3. Detach all cables that pass through RSS to Payload.

4. Detach cables and fibres that are connected to guider.

5. Remove the PSC1 box and Etalon 1 Pneumatic. (Insert pneumatic for etalon furthest from camera)

6. Remove all bolts attaching RSS to the Rho Stage. Leave 2 bolts in each of the 3 and 9 o’clock feet. Double check that there are no other bolts or attachments that connects RSS to the Rho Stage. (also check the inside of the pads)

7. Double check that there are no cables under the RSS structure.

8. Rotate the rotating structure to 0 degrees rho angle.

9. Set counterweight to best estimate of balanced with the articulation at 0 degrees.

10. Attach equal length straps to the 2 and 10 o’clock feet. Ensure the straps go through cross struts so they cannot slip. (Use 2 straps- a short section at the bottom with a Kevlar protecting sleeve and 2 longer straps as slings above it)

11. Attach the top end of the webbing strap to the spreader bar with the hooks in the furthest outside position.

12. Attach a block and tackle to the centre of the spreader beam.

13. Attach a block and tackle to the centre of the spreader beam.

14. Attach a sling to the RSS structure at 6 o’clock on the IR Beam articulation rail. Make sure it cannot slip.

15. Attach the other end of this sling to the hook of the block and tackle.

16. Take up the tension in the slings with the dome crane.

17. Take up tension with the block and tackle.

18. Attach long (30m) guide ropes to the 3 and 9 o’clock feet to stabilize rotation during lift.

19. Remove the remaining bolts at the 3 and 9 o’clock positions.

20. Slowly lift RSS until it clears the top of the Rho Stage.

21. Manoeuvre RSS over the SALT structure using the dome crane.

22. Always have 2 people stabilizing rotation with the guide ropes.

23. Rotate the Structure out of way to clear access to the 1st floor hatch. (to 60 deg)

24. Lower RSS through the hatch-RSS will need to be pulled outwards to clear the inner side of the hatch.

25. Hook the loading bay door crane on the 6 o’clock I beam position on RSS using a sling.
