Institutional Change and Economic Growth in Brazil Since 1870: Evidence from a New Dataset
Institutional Change and Economic Growth in Brazil since 1870: Evidence from a New Dataset January 21, 2020 Abstract Are institutions (and changes in institutions) a deep cause of economic growth? This paper tries to answer this question in a new way by focusing on within-country variation over long periods of time. It uses a new and unique hand-collected data set of political institutions and the power-ARCH econometric framework. The focus is on the link between institutional change and economic growth in Brazil from 1870 to 2003. The results suggest that both informal and formal political instability affect economic growth negatively, with important differences in terms of their short- versus long-run behavior, in that not all but just a few selected institutions affect economic growth in the long-run. Keywords: economic growth, political instability, power-ARCH, volatility JEL classification: C14, O40, E23, D72. 1 1 Introduction It is diffi cult to identify the causal effect of institutions on economic growth. In developed countries, institutions do change but they do so extremely slowly and the relevant starting point to evaluate their effect is arguably well beyond most available data (e.g., early 1800s may be ideal). On the other hand, institutions do change much more quickly in developing countries but the quality of the few existing data sets tends to be often unsatisfactory. This paper explores a new dataset and within country variation over extremely long time horizons in order to assess the causal effects of various types of institutions in terms of the growth rate of GDP. -

Railroads in Muncie 2 Running Head: Railroads in Muncie Abstract Railroads in Muncie, Indiana explains the evolution of railroads in Muncie, and Delaware County, Indiana. Throughout the history of the United States, the railroad industry has been a prominent contributor to the development and growth of states and communities. Communities that did not have railroads did not develop as competitively until improvements in roads and highways gave them access to an alternative form of transportation. This manuscript provides a brief overview of the history and location of the railroads in Muncie and their importance to the growth of the community. Copyright 2009. M. L. Johnston. Railroads in Muncie 3 Running Head: Railroads in Muncie Railroads in Muncie, Indiana Evolution of the U.S. Railroad Industry The U.S. railroad industry started around 1810 in the East. After the Civil War, railroad construction was rampant and often unscrupulous. Too many railroad lines were built that were under-capitalized, poorly constructed, and did not have enough current business to survive. Monopolistic and financial abuses, greed and political corruption forced government regulations on the railroads. From 1887 until 1980 the federal Interstate Commerce Commission strictly regulated economics and safety of all railroads operating in the U.S. Until 1980 the various states, also, regulated economics and safety of railroad companies within their individual state boundaries. Railroads are privately owned and the federal government considers them to be common carriers for the benefit of the public. -

Trabalho Apresentado Ao GT 2 - História Da Publicidade E Propaganda, No V Congresso Nacional De História Da Mídia – REDE ALCAR, Em SP, De 30 Maio a 2 Junho De 2007
A Bottom-Up History, Not a Comfortable Reinforcement
A Bottom-Up History, Not a Comfortable Reinforcement Agustín Guillamón is a dedicated anarcho-syndicalist activist whose partisanship has not affected his critical sensitivities nor prevented him from graphically outlining what he regards as the errors and inconsistencies of the Spanish libertarian left. His narrative relies extensively on the records of meetings, documents, and manifestos of the various factions and committees of the National Confederation of Labor (Confederation Nacional del Trabajo or CNT) and the Iberian Anarchist Federation (Federación Anarquista Ibérica or FAI), most especially those of the rank-and-file militants. This is a history from the “bottom up” not usually found in studies of the Spanish Revolution and Civil War. Guillamón’s book, as the editors of the Kate Sharpley Library note by way of introduction, “makes us reassess and debate what we thought we knew” (12). And it is “not an easy read for those of us looking for a comfortable reinforcement of the purity of our anarchist ideal” (10). The libertarian left in Spain, the CNT and FAI, were neither naïve nor unsophisticated, nor for that matter “filled with saintly militants driven by the purity, righteousness, and moral correctness of their mission.” They were organizations shaped by their members’ “experience of strikes, insurrections, imprisonment, exile, cultural activities, and lives led in the working class barrios and villages of Spain” (6-7). The anarchists and anarcho-syndicalists and their organizations formed an organic part of the working-class community, involved in each and every aspect of working-class life, social and cultural. And for all that it was a remarkably complex movement, containing various currents and tendencies that were frequently in conflict—both between and within the two organizations. -
Hoosiers and the American Story Chapter 5
Reuben Wells Locomotive The Reuben Wells Locomotive is a fifty-six ton engine named after the Jeffersonville, Indiana, mechanic who designed it in 1868. This was no ordinary locomotive. It was designed to carry train cars up the steepest rail incline in the country at that time—in Madison, Indi- ana. Before the invention of the Reuben Wells, trains had to rely on horses or a cog system to pull them uphill. The cog system fitted a wheel to the center of the train for traction on steep inclines. You can now see the Reuben Wells at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. You can also take rides on historic trains that depart from French Lick and Connersville, Indiana. 114 | Hoosiers and the American Story 2033-12 Hoosiers American Story.indd 114 8/29/14 10:59 AM 5 The Age of Industry Comes to Indiana [The] new kind of young men in business downtown . had one supreme theory: that the perfect beauty and happiness of cities and of human life was to be brought about by more factories. — Booth Tarkington, The Magnificent Ambersons (1918) Life changed rapidly for Hoosiers in the decades New kinds of manufacturing also powered growth. after the Civil War. Old ways withered in the new age Before the Civil War most families made their own of industry. As factories sprang up, hopes rose that food, clothing, soap, and shoes. Blacksmith shops and economic growth would make a better life than that small factories produced a few special items, such as known by the pioneer generations. -

Bringing together original historical research on the radical press and close readings of Yiddish avant-garde poetry by Moyshe-Leyb Halpern, Peretz Markish, Yankev Glatshteyn, and others, I show that the development of anarchist modernism was both a transnational literary trend and a complex worldview. My research draws from hitherto unread material in international archives to document the world of the Yiddish anarchist press and assess the scope of its literary influence. The dissertation’s theoretical framework is informed by diaspora studies, gender studies, and translation theory, to which I introduce anarchist diasporism as a new term. -

Causes of Chaos 1 Causes of Chaos: Understanding Economic Crises in Latin America Kevin Murphy Prof. Ahmad Etebari Causes of Chaos 2 Abstract I. This paper is an attempt at identifying the causes and commonalities of financial crises in Latin America over the past fifty years. This identification is carried out through an extensive review and analysis of the literature on causes of twelve major financial crises spanning over six major nations in Latin America. In addition, we conduct a Logit Binary Regression on commodity, interest rate and currency indexes to determine how closely related shifts in prices of the underlying asset are to times of financial crises. Through the literature review, we find the following major commonalities among the Latin American financial crises: over-dependence on commodities, poor macro and currency policies and overall political instability. -
