The Lynden Sculpture Garden is located at 2145 West Brown Deer Road. Admission is $9 general, $7 for students and seniors. Members and children under 6 are free. Admission includes access to the sculpture garden and house. All events listed below are free with admission unless otherwise indicated. Memberships are available.

HOURS In October, the Lynden Sculpture Garden is open Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 am to 5 pm; and Saturdays and Sundays from 12 noon to 5 pm (closed Thursdays). Our final late Wednesday (open until 7:30 pm) is October 2.

ON VIEW IN THE HOUSE Through December 1, 2013 FORREST MYERS: DOMESTICATED MONUMENTALISM More information: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/exhibitions/forrest-myers- domesticated-monumentalism Sculptor Forrest Myers moved to New York from the West Coast in 1961 and by the late sixties was becoming known for works both large and small: monumental sculptures like Four Corners and the diminutive Moon Museum that carried the work of Robert Rauschenberg, David Novros, John Chamberlain, Claes Oldenburg, Andy Warhol and Myers himself to the moon on a tiny ceramic wafer attached to the Apollo 12 lander. A founding member of the seminal Park Place Gallery in Soho and perhaps best known for The Wall, located on the side of a building not far from the gallery, Myers was part of an emerging downtown scene that ignored traditional boundaries between disciplines and between aesthetics and function. Lynden celebrates the unveiling of Quartet, 1967/2013 with an exhibition of his maquettes, furniture and metal paintings curated by Nicholas Frank.

Ongoing YEVGENIYA KAGANOVICH: grow More information: http://lyndensculpturegarden.org/exhibitions/artist-residence-yevgeniya- kaganovich Yevgeniya Kaganovich’s durational installation, grow, continues to occupy Lynden’s interstitial spaces. The plant-like forms, made from manipulated recycled plastic bags, will grow and spread over the period of a year or so. Their growth rate is determined by the number of bags accumulated in an official recycling bin at Lynden. New plantings are made at monthly grow workshops at Lynden (see Workshops, below), and grow will gradually spread to other locations.

ON THE GROUNDS ASHLEY JANKE: nAbr GALLERY More information: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/content/ashley-janke-nabr- gallery nAbr (not-a-bed-room) gallery is a re-constructed platforming project which consists of walls, a name, a collaborator and an exploration of exhibition. For Ashley Janke’s residency at Lynden, an outdoor iteration of her nAbr gallery has been constructed on the grounds. Consisting only of studded walls without a ceiling, nAbr houses artists selected by Janke for a series of rotating exhibitions over the course of a year.

EVENTS FOURTH ANNUAL EDUCATORS’ OPEN HOUSE Saturday, October 5, 2013 – 2-4 PM Free to educators. More information: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/fourth-annual- educators-open-house The Lynden Sculpture Garden offers a unique experience of art in nature through its collection of more than 50 monumental sculptures sited across 40 acres of park, lake and woodland. Our educational programs focus on connecting students and teachers with art and nature. At the Open House, educators are invited to: meet our educators; learn about our new tour program, Art as an Avenue to EcoAwareness, and our year-round educational opportunities; visit our art studio and picnic area; and enjoy light refreshments.

WOMEN’S SPEAKER SERIES NANCY HILLER: HOW RESTORING A HOUSE CAN RESTORE A LIFE Wednesday, October 16, 2013 – 7-9 pm Admission: $35/$30 Lynden Sculpture Garden/Historic Milwaukee Incorporated members – includes an autographed copy of A Home of Her Own, refreshments by MKELocalicious, and admission to the sculpture garden (come early and stroll!). Hiller will offer an illustrated presentation and, on Thursday, a hands-on workshop on turn-of-the-century finishing techniques. For Hiller, restoration can be a self-revelatory process: we learn as much about what we’re made of as we do about the structure on which we’re working, and we ourselves emerge transformed. She has observed that many of us, while restoring our home, form a relationship with the place that can rival the intimacy and satisfactions of relationships with human partners. Hiller traces her admiration for old houses to her teenage years in England, where she helped her mother and stepfather rehabilitate a couple of turn-of-the-century row houses. A designer-builder of custom furniture and cabinetry for historic houses, Hiller is the author of the award-winning book A Home of Her Own (2011), a collection of stories about women who have found a compelling kind of partnership in homes they have restored. BIRDING AT LYNDEN SCULPTURE GARDEN WITH CHUCK STEBELTON Saturday, October 19, 2013 – 8 am-10 am Free to members or with admission to the sculpture garden. Please wear appropriate footwear and bring your binoculars if you have them; no previous birding experience required. Chuck Stebelton will lead the bird walk. He is a birder, poet, and works as Program Director at Woodland Pattern Book Center.

DOG DAYS AT LYNDEN Saturday, October 19, 2013 - 12 noon-5 pm Free to dogs and members or with admission to the sculpture garden. DOG DAYS AT LYNDEN CO-PRESENTS BWAKAW at the Milwaukee LGBT Film/Video Festival Sunday, October 20, 2013 – 1 pm UWM Union Theatre, located on the 2nd floor of the UWM Union , 2200 E. Rene is in his 70's, his only companion a once-stray dog named Bwakaw. Together they live on the outskirts of (a vividly portrayed) small village, lodgings now crowded with a coffin, his coffin, that he has already bought. (It was on sale and the funeral parlor storing it for him had to close.) Rene only came out in his 60's, and, now, nearing the end of a life not fully lived and trying to negotiate his regrets, he wonders about the isolation he helped sustain, the connections not risked. Mostly, he is cranky: barking at those who try to tolerate his cantankerous self, yelling at moto-taxi drivers, for instance, who charge extra for canines. But, stirred by new attractions, Rene hazards new relationships and a new idea of himself. Starring Eddie Garcia as Rene, in a performance already considered legendary, and Princess as the loyal, unquestioning Bwakaw.

SUNDAY NATURE WALK WITH NAOMI COBB Sunday, October 27, 2013 – 2-3 pm Free to members or with admission to the sculpture garden. More information: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/sunday-nature-walks- naomi-cobb-oct-2013 The Lynden Sculpture Garden is recognized for its art and landscaped beauty, and most visitors confine their walks to the lawns and formal gardens. However, the 40 acres that make up Lynden include meadows with native plants and trees, ponds that support a huge array of aquatic life, and thickets filled with nesting activity and shelter. Numerous birds, insects and mammals are sighted each day. Come explore the hidden natural treasures of this unique sanctuary with naturalist Naomi Cobb. Each month we will visit the back acres, observing what the seasons bring, and locating evidence of the abundant life that is there. Wear good hiking shoes, dress for the weather, and bring your curiosity and wonder. CLASSES & WORKSHOPS HOMESCHOOL DAY: SEEDS Thursday, October 3, 2013 – 9:30 am-2:30 pm Fee: $35/$30 members Ages: 6-15 More information and to register: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/content/homeschool-days-lynden-sculpture- garden In 2013-2014, Lynden Sculpture Garden will offer five Homeschool Days for children aged 6-15 (discount available if you register for all five at once). Designed by art educator Jeremy Stepien and naturalist Naomi Cobb, these workshops integrate our collection of monumental outdoor sculpture with the natural ecology of 40 acres of park, ponds and woodland, creating a unique, hands-on, small-group experience of art and nature. Two workshop topics are offered each day, one focusing on three-dimensional artmaking and the other on the natural environment. Participants are divided by age, and switch between the appropriate two-hour workshops with a lunch break at midday.

All plants ensure their future by creating a seed: an essential unit of nature that provides food, protection, even locomotion for the next generation. This workshop is devoted to the realm of seeds. Outside we will explore the many sizes, shapes and types of seeds we find. In the art studio we’ll interpret this first stage of the life cycle as we create sculptures by embedding seeds in biodegradable materials like beeswax, clay, and paper pulp. Plant your sculpture outdoors, and watch it sprout into new life as it decomposes.

BUILD YOUR OWN CANOE WITH ALL HANDS BOATWORKS Saturdays, October 5-19, 2013 (October 5 & October 12, 9 am-4 pm; October 19, 9 am- noon). Fee: $425/$399 members. This is the fee for a team of two. All materials are included and you keep the boat you make. This workshop is ideally suited for one adult and one child (ages 10-17) or two adults. Space is limited to four teams. Have you ever wished that you could build something with your partner, child or grandchild that would make a lasting memory? Enroll in this introduction to boatbuilding workshop. Learn new craft skills as you and your teammate build a handsome, 15-foot plywood canoe that is yours to keep. We’ll use common tools and materials and discover a new uncommon language as we cut and assemble the frames, gussets, gunwales, and chines. No previous experience necessary. grow WORKSHOP WITH YEVGENIYA KAGANOVICH Sunday, October 6, 2013 – 1-5 pm Free to members or with admission to the sculpture garden. More information: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/grow-workshop- yevgeniya-kaganovich-9 Yevgeniya Kaganovich and her student assistants take up residence in the studio to make the next “planting” of grow, Kaganovich’s durational installation. Drop in to watch or participate as Kaganovich fuses the layers of plastic to create a surface similar to leather or skin, molds the skin into plant-like volumes, stuffs the volumes with more bags, and connects the forms with plastic bag “thread.” Tasks include cutting sheets and strips; fusing sheets and tubes; sewing bulb forms and connecting them to bases; crocheting tubes and necks; stuffing stalks; and assembling the plants. Join naturalist Naomi Cobb on one of two Tuesdays each month for hands-on, all-senses-engaged exploration of the natural world at Lynden. We’ll consider a new theme each month, taking into account the changing seasons. The theme for October is spiders.

NEW PERSPECTIVES ON COMPOSTING FOR BACKYARD GARDENERS Saturday, October 12, 2013 – 2-3:30 pm Free to members or with admission to the sculpture garden. More information: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/new-perspectives- composting-backyard-gardeners This presentation by Bruno R. Follador, Biodynamic Researcher and Consultant, and Angela L. Curtes, Land Preservation Consultant, is designed for home gardeners of all ages who are ready to take composting to the next level. As home growers know, good soil is critical to the success of a backyard garden. But quality of soil is also a crucial foundation for healthy ecosystems, food systems and quality of life conditions for the future of humanity. This presentation will explore how to create or improve and enhance your existing compost, while also further exploring the deeper meaning and context of soil fertility and garden ecology. We will also introduce a relatively new method of composting that can be implemented on a backyard garden scale that uses a hot controlled fermentation process that rapidly transforms materials into a high quality compost that promotes and builds soil structure and fertility.

FAMILY WORKSHOP: WOOL VESSELS Sunday, October 13, 2013 – 12:30-2:30 pm Free to members or with admission to the sculpture garden. More information: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/family-workshop- wool-vessels Drop by the art studio between 12:30 and 2:30 and join in this all ages workshop (best for ages 7 and up). We’ll wind natural wool from Hillspring Eco-Farm, a local organic grower, into felt vessels. This simple process creates felt forms that are both decorative and functional. Embellish your finished vessel with colorful embroidery. No experience required.

SCHOOL’S OUT WORKSHOP: EARTHY OBJECTS Monday, October 14 or Friday, October 25, 2013 – 9 am-4 pm (late pickup available) Ages: 6-11 Fee: $60 / $52 members More information and to register: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/content/schools- out Inspired by artist-in-residence Linda Wervey Vitamvas’s shoreline Feast (2013), we will make observational maquettes in clay at the edge of the pond and then return to the studio to create imaginative works using ephemeral materials such as pond algae pulp, reeds, and feathers.

FINISHING TECHNIQUES: A WORKSHOP WITH NANCY HILLER Thursday, October 17, 2013 – 9 am-12 noon Fee: $75/$70 Lynden Sculpture Garden/Historic Milwaukee Incorporated members (special rate for those who also attend Hiller’s presentation on October 16—see EVENTS, above). More information and to register: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/nancy- hiller-finishing-techniques-workshop Nancy Hiller, a designer-builder of custom furniture and cabinetry for historic houses and author of the award-winning book A Home of Her Own (2011), offers a hands-on workshop featuring two versatile finishing techniques: a shellac-type finish for wood and milk paint. You will learn to make new furniture, cabinetry, and interior trim match original woodwork from 1895 or 1913 using simple materials and techniques, all by hand. As a bonus, learn to mix, apply, and topcoat milk paint, the original green finish, to achieve a variety of effects.

HANDBUILDING I: BOWLS A WORKSHOP WITH LINDA WERVEY VITAMVAS Saturday, October 19, 2013 – 10 am-4 pm Fee: $85/$75 members (all materials included). Registration is limited! More information and to register: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/handbuilding-i-bowls-oct-2013 Working in clay is deeply satisfying, and making pottery allows one to explore aesthetics and function simultaneously. In this workshop we will take the bowl from start to finish. We will familiarize ourselves with this versatile material and learn three simple techniques: coiling, pinching, and using a slump mold. To finish, we will embellish our three bowl forms with surface decoration using texturing techniques and brushwork. The pots will then be fired with a clear glaze to protect the surface and make them functional.

COMING UP IN NOVEMBER We begin the month with Lynden by Night, an after-hours nature walk with Naomi Cobb on November 3; she will offer her monthly daylight Sunday Nature Walk on November 24. Kelly Lahl is back with two new dyeing workshops: Japanese Earth Pigment Dyeing (Nov. 4) and Sun Printing on Fabric (Nov. 11). We offer another in a series of ceramics workshops with artist-in- residence Linda Wervey Vitamvas on November 23; Handbuilding I focuses on bowls. Jeremy Stepien teaches Willow Reed Basketmaking (Nov. 9) and offers a drop-in Family Workshop: Gallery Magnets (Nov. 10). There’s a School’s Out Workshop (Earthy Objects, Nov. 8) and a Homeschool Day (Adaptation, Nov. 21). Our November grow workshop is on the 17th, Tuesdays in the Garden fall on November 12 and 26 (the theme is squirrels) and Dog Day is November 30 (a good opportunity to walk off the Thanksgiving feast).
