INFORMATION FOR PARTICIPANTS

Geography Area: 823,145 sq. km. (320,827 sq. mi.); the size of Texas and Louisiana combined. Cities: Capital--Windhoek (2001 census) pop.: 233,529. Other cities--Grootfontein, Katima Mulilo, Keetmanshoop, Luderitz, Odangwa, Oranjemund, Oshakati, Otjiwarongo, Swakopmund, Tsumeb, Walvis Bay. Terrain: Varies from coastal desert to semiarid mountains and plateau. Climate: Semidesert and high plateau.

People Nationality: Namibian(s). The Indigenous Group consists of the Owambo, Herero, Damara, Nama, Kavango, Caprivians, San, Tswana and Basters, while the Western Group is made up of Germans, Afrikaners, English and Portuguese. City of Windhoek The City teams with life and dynamic cultural activities. Windhoek‘s population is about 240 000, which is mainly made up by indigenous and western descendant groups.

Due to ideal habitual and job opportunities that Namibia, and Windhoek in particular, has to offer, other groups are emerging such as Indians, Chinese, Malaysian and so on. All groups enjoy peace and harmony, the city upholds the principles of the rule of law and all citizens enjoy peace and harmony.

The City has friendly residents who are united and enjoys mutual harmony.

Climate Temperatures in Windhoek in October are between 15°C and 29°C. The days are generally hot while the nights are much cooler.

Languages The official language of Namibia is English, but simultaneous translation will be provided for the workshop in French.

The airport is around 45 km from the City of Windhoek. Transport will be provided by the Namibia Meteorological Service to and from the airport.

Visa formality Entry visas are required for all participants. Applications should therefore be done at the embassy/consulate in their respective country of residence.

Banking The official unit currency of Namibia is the Namibian dollar. This new currency is linked to the South African rand on a one-to-one basis. The exchange rate is 1U$ to N$ 7.15.

Traveller’s cheques can be exchanged in most banks in Windhoek. The American Express, Visas, Diners and MasterCard are widely acceptable.

Hotel Accommodation Accommodation is available at the Conference Venue, at Safari Hotel. Participant opting to stay elsewhere would be responsible for their own transport to and from the Conference Venue.

Participants should please confirm which accommodation type they prefer. Confirmation from the Hotel Safari will be subject to availability. (See attached Hotel Registration Form.)
