Web Site Design and Development

The splash page was designed using Macromedia Flash 5. After about one week of researching different features of the program and went to work on the intro. We used many effects such as text fade and use of manipulating images to get the best effect. The web site was created using the corporation presentation template in Microsoft FrontPage 2000 incorporating frames and hyperlinks to web pages within frames. The copy of zero theme was applied to easily maintain consistency in design elements and color schemes. Customization of the theme included modifications of color scheme and vertical navigation button graphics using Adobe

Photoshop. The original graphic on the banner was replaced with a customized overlay of graphics and The Great Valley Technology Alliance Logo applied as an image map linked to the original web site. Figure 1 is an organization chart outlining the page levels of the web site.

The home page offers a brief overview of what the Great Valley Technology Alliance is, what it comprises, participants, and what it will enable. The vision and executive summary WBAVTS 2 pages contain data taken directly from the Battelle study. The vision identifies what the Great

Valley hopes to achieve in repositioning the region with the transformation to a knowledge- based, technology driven economy. The executive summary outlines the strategies and implementation action plans to build the economy for the Great Valley.

The acknowledgements page includes scanned images and testimonials of representatives in the region. Sources of the testimonials were given copies of the Battelle study and folder highlighting important parts.

Regional activities are shown on the entertainment page displaying scanned images and links to the Arena, Red Baron’s Stadium, Montage Mountain, and Cinemark. Also included in the entertainment page is a link to an interactive calendar created using java script that will open another window and allow users to add and customize their own daily reminders by clicking directly on the number for the date of the month. Another interactive java script feature is the hangman game specifically for information technology terms.

Generating, attracting, and keeping a skilled labor force is identified as the key to building a technology-based economy in the region. Educational resources are a major force in leveraging the inability to maintain college graduates and meet industry’s needs for technically skilled workers. The education page lists the region’s educational institutions, the types of degrees offered and links to their web sites in a formatted table.

The participants page lists the names of business, education, and governmental representatives that participated in over 100 interviews that were conducted to contribute to the development of the Battelle study. The names were inserted in a table with adjusted properties to fit column widths automatically. WBAVTS 3

An interactive forms page to obtain information from viewers of the page who may be interested in volunteering their assistance in attaining the Great Valley vision in contained on the recruitment page. The form elements were created in a nested table and include one-line text boxes, a scrolling text box, and two default buttons to submit or reset data. Once the form is submitted, the CGI script writes the information to a text file that will be viewed by a administrator.
