Seated Strength Training Monday, December 4th, 11th & 18th 1:05 – 1:55 PM Thursday, December 7th 11:00 – 11:55 AM Instructor: Lori Rozell Get an effective workout in this seated/standing strength training class. Come and improve your posture, increase your flexibility and strengthen your muscles. Try consistent strength training to decrease your risk of falling and improve your general health and mobility. RATING: Energy Level 2 – This program includes active exercises and moderate energy is required.
Movin’ & Groovin’ For Fitness Tuesday, December 12th 9:00 – 9:55 AM Instructor: Tara Rice
Instructor Tara invites you to her lively dance fitness program tailored for the active senior. You will love doing low impact aerobics and dance moves to high energy pop and Latin music. Strength & balance exercises will be included. Join this great class to increase your stamina and flexibility as well as strengthen your core, buns and legs. Don’t miss this fun workout session! Note: Please bring a pair of weights (1-3 lbs.), bottled water and sneakers. Rating: Energy Level 3 – This program includes fast paced exercises and high energy is required.
Caregiver Ambassador Program Tuesday, December 5th 10:00 – 11:30 AM
Are you caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia? HELP is now available through the Caregiver Ambassador Program offered by the Parker Jewish Institute. The Caregiver Ambassador, a licensed social worker, will meet with you privately and offer resources such as free memory screenings and tips on how to speak with a doctor about memory problems. There will also be a discussion with the caregiver on the importance of taking a break. The Ambassador is trained to assist with information and referrals regarding caregiver programs, medical care, respite care, benefits, support groups and more. Take advantage of this important program where caregivers can meet one-on-one with a social worker. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED - Call 431-3510 to make an appointment.
Chair Exercise Challenge Tuesday, December 12th 10:00 – 10:55 AM Instructor: Jan Steinberger
Get a full-body workout in this challenging chair exercise class. While seated you will work all muscle groups, including your abs. The workout will utilize hand weights, exercise balls and resistance bands. Standing, stretching, flexibility, balance and posture movements will be incorporated. Join this wonderful class for an effective workout! SPECIAL NOTE: Please bring sneakers, bottled water, a pair of weights (1 to 5 pounds), a stretch band, an exercise ball and a towel. RATING: Energy Level 2 – This program includes active exercises and moderate energy is required. The Inside Scoop On Fall Prevention Thursday, December 14th 1 1:00 – 11:55 AM Instructor: Antonette S. Cabello, P.T. Long Beach Nursing and Rehabilitation Center Fall prevention is a priority to all of us. Expert physical therapist Antonette Cabello, from the Long Beach Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, will introduce you to vital physical activities that can go a long way towards preventing a fall. Antonette will show you different levels of exercises which can be done anytime and anywhere. Such activities will reduce your risk of falling by improving your strength, balance, coordination and flexibility. Just Paint Away Thursdays in December 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM Instructor: Honey Geller This fun filled art class focuses on individual expression and freedom of your artistic spirit. You will work in a relaxing ambience which will inspire you to just paint away. Budding and experienced artists will enjoy the creativity of painting with acrylics or watercolor. Bring your own image to work from or use one provided by the instructor. Special Note: Acrylic artists, who would like to learn how to create texture and 3D effects, should bring 8 oz. Movement & Meditation With Lisa Friday, December 22nd 1:00 – 1:50 PM Instructor: Lisa Wisel This seated meditation is intended for beginners and experienced meditators. The intent and approach is simple: to honor one’s desire to heal, to include your entire self and to focus on the sensation of physical embodiment. There is a word/intention that will support different aspects of humanness. Note: Chairs are provided. Bring a pillow or mat for additional support or if you would like to lie on the floor. Rating: Energy Level 1 – Both seated exercises and mild standing activities.
Sundays At The Movies Holiday Film Event Sunday, December 17th 10:00 AM – 2:30 PM Instructor: Philip Harwood
Fitting for the holiday season, our year end film event will feature one of the greatest film epics of all time, Ben-Hur. On December 17th, Philip Harwood, well known film historian and moderator, will view and discuss this 1959 American historical drama film. Join us for light refreshments, discussion and a movie screening. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED – CALL 431-3510. Please let us know you are coming in case a cancellation is necessary. This program is available to seniors who are registered at the Magnolia Senior Center. Please let us know if you will be bringing a guest. December 17 th : Ben-Hur (1959, Director William Wyler) This Academy Award winning film received 11 awards including Best Picture, Actor and Director. Ben-Hur stars Charlton Heston as wealthy Hebrew prince Judah Ben-Hur, whose life parallels that of Jesus Christ. After being condemned to the galleys by ex-friend Messala (Stephen Boyd), Judah survives a naval battle and matches might with Messala in that legendary chariot race.
