Expectations for Confirmation Preparation

Expectations for Confirmation Preparation

Confirmation is the third sacrament of initiation. It is conferred when there is evidence of conversion. Thus, the preparation time is not a series of classes so much as it is a faith journey. Those undertaking the journey seek a change of heart through learning about our faith, serving others and prayer & reflection. Religious knowledge is essential, but it is only a means to an end. The goal of Confirmation preparation is a conversion that engages the whole person: mind, body, and soul. With this in mind, it is expected that you will enter the journey with a willing heart, an open mind, and commitment to the following:

1. Mass Attendance: You are expected to live out your baptismal promise that you believe in Jesus Christ and all of His teachings. Parents, please take this responsibility seriously and bring your child to Mass every Sunday and Holy Day of Obligation. 2. Class Attendance: You are expected to attend and participate in your religious education, either through Saint Matthew School or Parish School of Religion. Failure to maintain this expectation will demonstrate your lack of commitment and may result in postponing Confirmation. 3. Sponsor: You are asked to invite someone to sponsor you for Confirmation. This person must be willing to support you during the journey of preparation by talking with you and listening to your concerns and hopes. Your sponsor must be a practicing, fully initiated Catholic and at least 16 years old. Please see the Sponsorship form for criteria of the term “practicing Catholic.” According to Canon law parents cannot serve as sponsors. 4. Confirmation Name: You are asked to choose a Confirmation name. You will be presented to the Bishop by this name. Confirmation completes Baptism, so use of your Baptismal (birth) name is perfectly acceptable. It is customary to choose a saint whose life or patronage relates to or inspires you. 5. Evenings of Reflection: Confirmation Candidates are required to attend two evenings of reflection throughout the year. On October 15, candidates will attend with their sponsors 6:00-7:30 PM in the Noble Center. Parents can proxy for sponsors if necessary. On February 25, candidates will attend with one or both of their parents 6:00-7:30 PM in the Noble Center. 6. Confirmation Rehearsal: Thursday, March 15, 2018 7:00-8:00 PM in the Church. Candidate and sponsors must attend; parents can proxy for sponsors if necessary. 7. Confirmation Mass: Friday, March 16, 2018 7:00 PM in the Church. Candidates will arrive by 6:15 PM in the Hutta Gym. Individual/family photos are available prior to this, a group photo will be taken at 6:30 PM. Sponsors will arrive by 6:30 PM in the Undercroft of the Church. A dessert reception in the Hutta Gym will follow Mass. 8. Continue Your Faith Journey: Confirmation is not a graduation ceremony from religious education. Our faith journey is life-long. As a fully initiated Catholic, your responsibility is to continue your education and spiritual formation. Use your gifts and talents to involve yourself in the parish and the universal Church.
