SHAW, SR., MAYOR 14 OF LANCASTER, AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST 15 SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS. 16 17 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of 18 Representatives were deeply saddened to learn of the recent death 19 of the Honorable Joe M. Shaw, Sr., Mayor of Lancaster, on 20 November 29, 2015, at the venerable age of eightythree; and 21 22 Whereas, born in Kershaw County, Joe Shaw came into this world 23 on May 26, 1932, a son of the late Hobson Shaw and Carrie Lee 24 Shaw. The young Joe was educated in the Lancaster public 25 schools; and 26 27 Whereas, in time, he married his high school sweetheart, the 28 former Charlotte Mullis, and with her parented a fine son, Joe M. 29 Shaw, Jr., who has given his parents the joy of a delightful 30 granddaughter, JoAnna; and 31 32 Whereas, first elected in 1979, Joe served as Mayor of Lancaster 33 for thirtythree years and was very civicminded his entire adult life. 34 He helped develop the Dixie Youth Baseball program and served 35 as league president for many years. He was very active in the 36 Lancaster Jaycees, serving in many local and district offices, and 37 for his faithful labors he received the Distinguished Service Award 38 in 1967. He served as PTA president of several schools his son 39 attended, including Central School and Chesterfield Avenue 40 School; and 41
[4818] 2 1 Whereas, in addition, Joe served as coach of the Central School 2 football team for several years. He later joined the Lancaster 3 Civitan chapter and served in many capacities, including that of 4 president of the local organization, and received its Citizen of the 5 Year Award in 1975. He helped organize the Lancaster chapter of 6 the South Carolina Gamecock Club and served as its president for 7 many years; and 8 9 For his labors on behalf of the citizens of this great State, in 2010 10 Governor Mark Sanford awarded Joe Shaw the Order of the 11 Palmetto, the State of South Carolina’s highest civilian accolade; 12 and 13 14 Whereas, as a man of faith, Joe loved his church, where he served 15 as an usher. He loved life, loved people, and enjoyed helping 16 others; and 17 18 Whereas, he leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, 19 Charlotte Mullis Shaw; a son, Joe M. (Melanie) Shaw, Jr., of Irmo; 20 a granddaughter, JoAnna Lee Shaw of Chester; a 21 stepgranddaughter, Emily Kennedy Merritt of Irmo; a sister, Jean 22 S. Doverspike of Columbia; and a host of other relatives and 23 friends. He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of 24 knowing and working with him. Now, therefore, 25 26 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 27 28 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 29 by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of 30 the Honorable Joe M. Shaw, Sr., Mayor of Lancaster, and extend 31 the deepest sympathy to his family and many friends. 32 33 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to 34 Mrs. Charlotte Shaw for the family and to the City of Lancaster. 35 XX 36
