Course Description: This course is designed to assist students in making critical decisions about food, which contributes to health and well-being. Laboratory instruction is included as an application process. Practical problems addressed relate to attitudes toward food, nutrition facts, special health concerns and diets, management of food resources, preparation skills and careers in nutrition and food service. Leadership development will be provided through the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America.
Class Expectations:

Consequences: Consequences will depend upon the expectation that was not met. Handbook expectation consequences will be according to handbook. Missing work resulting from not being in class will result in no participation in food labs until all missing work is turned in. All other expectation consequences will result in a 1.) a warning, 2.) student/teacher conference, 3.) break detention, 4.) contact administration. Ms. Hatton does have the discretion to notify administration immediately should the need arise.

*Ms. Hatton may change the unit and activities based upon needs of the students! Classroom Procedures: 1.) First Five!: When the bell rings, be prepared for the Bell Ringer or other activity posted or handed to student at the door. 2.) Class Assignments/Projects: All work assignments must be turned in on time. Assignments turned in late will result in point deductions. There will be no participation in food labs if student has a zero for not turning in assignments. 3.) Grading: There are designated trays on the cart beside my desk to turn in all daily assignments and homework. Please turn in all work in the designated area. Work turned in at other locations will result in no grade on that work. 4.) Make up Work: All make-up work will be in the folder after an absence. It is your responsibility to pick up your make up work and ask me any questions you may have. 5.) Make up Tests/Labs: I will be available to work out a time/day for the make- up of tests and labs. Make-ups will not occur during class time. If you are absent for any reason you will need to make up the lab after school OR receive an alternative assignment. 6.) 10/10 Rule: No student will be permitted to leave the room during the first 10 minutes and final 10 minutes of class. 7.) Final Five!: I dismiss the class, not the bell. Before class will be dismissed all books/materials are picked up and put away. There will be an exit activity to complete as well. No one will leave the classroom until the room is straight. Students will exit the class through the door located in the back of the classroom. 8.) Foods labs: While in the kitchen, everyone must work together as a team and follow all lab expectations. Safety is the number priority during lab and anyone not adhering to this will be asked to sit down and receive a zero for that lab. Should you have a zero in infinite campus you will not be permitted to participate in the food lab. You will not be permitted to participate in food labs until all week is up to date in infinite campus. 9.) Purses and Backpacks: Purses and backpacks will need to remain off the tables and clear from the area between tables. If you do not like this, leave these items in your locker. If this becomes a problem, I will forbid any purses and/or backpacks to enter the classroom. 10.)Cell Phones and Electronic Policy: BCHS student policy will be followed. Cell phones may only be used during assignments for technology purposes. NO cell phones, iPods, or MP3 players may be used during lecture or guest speaker times.

Dear Parent/Guardian:
I am extremely excited to have your child as a student in one of my Family and Consumer Sciences courses at Bourbon County High School. This year we are going to take learning to the next level. Students will be challenged through various activities, assignments, and projects. There will be an assortment of techniques used to deliver the material to your student. I am certainly looking forward to a great school year.
Beyond the classroom, your student has the opportunity to be involved in the Family and Consumer Sciences national student organization Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). FCCLA is the only student organization that focuses on the family. The mission of FCCLA is to promote personal growth and leadership development through family and consumer sciences education. Focusing on the multiple roles of family member, wage earner, and community leader, members develop skills for life through- character development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, practical knowledge and vocational preparation. Encourage your student to become involved in this dynamic student organization. Dues are only $15.00. Also, check out the FCCLA website at www.fcclainc.org.
I look forward to a successful year with your student. Please know that your student is always in my best interest, which is why certain classroom procedures and expectations have been set in place. It is my hope that you and your student have gone over the guidelines listed above and you have initialed them accordingly.
