School Advisory Council (SAC) New River Middle School Minutes October 20, 2016

Meeting called to order 4:32 p.m.

Review and approval of minutes from May 2016 Motion to approve minutes by Hari Heller and Frazier seconded it. No opposed.

Ms. Wessinger:

Thursday, October 27, 2016 Early Release Naviance is being done through ELA classes. Self-assessments are given to guide them in the direction of their interests. There will be dance for the students.

Friday, October 28, 2016 Teacher Planning

Monday, October 31, 2016 will be breast cancer awareness day so everyone will be wearing pink.

Monday, October 24, 2016- Accreditation Visit approximately 10:30 beginning with Wessinger interview. Then they will be visiting classrooms and speaking with the students. Mrs. Wessinger shared the rubric that will be used to score classrooms. There will be a 4:00 -5:00 session for parents asking the parents questions about the school that they would be representing. This will be at the Pompano Complex. The school has been preparing for the

Ms. Shabsels:

She is presenting MobyMax.com to the group. It was funded through accountability funds last year and is requesting for funding again this year. Science 6-8 grades have been added. This program can be utilized through their phones not just computers. As computer carts are added to the school, it will be utilized more regularly through more subject areas. She gave an overview of the features provided through the program to help support the learning in the classroom. It provides up to date data for the teachers to properly prepare and organize the students and classes.

Quote: $1,200 for the year.

A plan will need to be put into place to implement the program so that every student gets access and parents are notified of progress.

SAC will vote for the funding at the next meeting.

Title I Update :

SAF/IZone Update

Central Area Advisory Meeting today.

Boundaries were discussed and we need an IZone representative. Mr. Jonathan Bennett will be one of our representatives.

There was a presentation for bullying. The information will be provided in the Parent Resource Room. There is now a laptop in there.

ED Talk at November 5th and must register online. Breakfast begins at 8:00 am.

Websites throughout the county have to be uniform.

A SAF meeting will be directly after today’s SAC Meeting.

Book Fair earned just over $4,000. We kept $500 cash and $1,000 in trade dollars with Scholastic. Civics were purchased magazines dealing with the election.

Mrs. Reep provided support to Mr. Kelly to get the SAC information updated. SAC is meant to keep parents abreast of what is being done within the school to provide a quality education to increase student achievement. Election:

Parents not present for two meetings were removed from the list. Volunteers to be on the voting SAC committee. John Bennett, Brittany Davis, Pamela Fletcher, Hari Heller, Jerard Heller, Mari Hershewe, Robyn Ludy, Karen Orlosky, Joelle Pope, Vicent Sica, and Carla Wong.

Mr. Kelly read off the list of parent and community members and voting for the slate to be voted in. The slate carried. Employee and Staff slates were read off and was carried. SAC Chair was open for discussion. It was voted to have Mr. Kelly continue as SAC Chair.

New Business Mrs. Reep is working on a program to recognize students who are doing the a great job in each subject area. One boy and one girl from each content area, about 30 students, each month for a celebration with their parents. There will be certificates, pictures and breakfast providers. Mrs. Reep is working with our partner, McDonald’s, to help provide food.

Mrs. Wessinger spoke about Ms. O’Fallon being nominated for God Mother of Cruise Line. The announcement of the winner will be made Monday, October 24, 2016.

Mr. Figueroa, 120 students are participating in the Sea Stars Program. The students are doing well and received accolades at today’s county level meeting. They are operating at 134%.

Motion by Mrs. Heller to adjourn meeting and Mrs. Frazier-Wright seconded it. No one opposed.
