1. PRP Training Conferences
The first of several planned pharmaceutical training sessions took place on October 26, 2006 at the Radisson Hotel at Cross Keys at the City Hospital Forum. Approximately forty Region 3 disaster planners, hospital administrators and pharmacists were in attendance, including BCHD Commisioner, Dr. Joshua Scharfstein. Dr. Michael Millin presented an overview of PRP work, Dr. Christa Singleton discussed pharmaceutical preparedness from a local health department perspective and Ms. Truemenda Green gave an overview of 2007 HRSA funding. Portions of the program were videotaped and are being edited for inclusion in the CD-ROM format for distribution.
Dr. Singleton has recently left her position at the BCHD Office of Emergency Preparedness and has taken on a new job at the CDC. Her instrumental role in the PRP’s efforts over the past several years was acknowledged. Dr. Laura Herrera has now assumed responsibilities for emergency preparedness activities at BCHD, supported by Deborah Silver. Detailed planning for additional PRP training conferences will take place following this transition period.
2. JHI Training
Several video modules have been completed and are posted online. The videotaping for the module on pharmaceutical preparedness for pediatric populations is scheduled for Nov. 20th and the Board of Pharmacy will discuss at its next meeting tomorrow who will present the ASHP position statement on the role of hospital pharmacist. All modules are tentatively scheduled to be completed by December and CDs will be produced for distribution.
3. Other Conferences
The PRP has been invited present its work to the HRSA Region III meeting to be held in Washington, D.C. on Nov. 29-30. Additionally, the PRP has been invited to present at the National Emergency Preparedness Summit in New Orleans next March.
4. Prioritization of Anti-viral Prophylaxis
Surveys have been returned from 12 subject matter experts. Preliminary survey results were reviewed with the group. BCHD has maintained a list of contacts of attendees at the City Hospital Forum and will distribute this survey electronically. 5. Publications
The PRP’s recent publication was distributed to the group. A separate manuscript detailing findings of the statewide pharmaceutical preparedness survey has been accepted for publication and is schedule to be released in Aug-Sept in Prehospital Disaster Medicine.
The next scheduled meeting is for Tuesday, December 19, 2006 at 2PM.
