Ways to Complete Study Abroad Service Hours (Fall 2010)

Ways to Complete Study Abroad Service Hours

1. Study Abroad Fair 2. Classroom Presentations 3. Study Abroad Information Tables at the Union and Across Campus 4. Group Events 5. Other Opportunities. 6. Videos 7. Referring Friends 8. Have your own ideas?

1. STUDY ABROAD FAIR: This is a major event in the K-State Union courtyard where students can learn more about study abroad, service learning, internships, scholarships, teaching English abroad, and the Peace Corps. This event will take place in late January, 2012, but we will need volunteers before and during to help with items such as chalking sidewalks and putting up posters, as well with helping during the actual fair. I will be sending an e-mail with details of this event so that you can sign up. (1 hour at fair = 1 hour of service)

2. CLASSROOM PRESENTATIONS: You can present your study abroad experiences to a classroom, organization, or club (as long as there are K-State students present). This presentation can be a PowerPoint, or just a short talk. Every presentation = 30 minutes of service. In order to have the presentation hours count, you MUST have the two attached forms filled out and hand them into the Office of International Programs (OIP) in Fairchild 304. The first form is the Presentation Info Sheet , which has basic information about the group that you are presenting to. The second form is the Class presentation completion form, which needs to signed by the person in charge of facilitating the presentation (i.e. professor, president/officer of organization/group/sorority/fraternity etc). The final attachment is the presentation material check list. This is a basic list of some things that you can consider bringing to your presentation to hand out (such as study abroad flyers etc) to students that are interested in going abroad also. Before you can actually conduct the presentation, you MUST meet with a study abroad peer advisor or study abroad advisor to go over some presentation guidelines. To pick up anything for your presentation you can come into the OIP office between 8am-6pm weekdays and speak to a peer advisor. Finally, if you are doing a PowerPoint presentation and would like some help getting started, or ideas, please go the following website: http://www.k-state.edu/studyabroad/presentations/

3. STUDY ABROAD INFORMATION TABLES AT THE UNION/ACROSS CAMPUS OR ABROAD: Throughout the semester there will be a study abroad tables set up at the union, as well as in various buildings across campus. Students will be K-State representatives at these tables to promote K-State Study Abroad as well as answer any questions that students may have as well as to direct them to the study abroad office. Create information packages and presentations for exchange programs that are unbalanced. These would be presentations about the university (i.e. University of Canberra in Australia), or one on K-State to share with other exchange programs while you are abroad ** . While abroad find out if your school has a Study Abroad fair and if you can have a K-State table there to promote studying abroad at K-State. Even if they don’t have a fair, you may be able to have a table at their union **

4. GROUP EVENTS. . . If you are a part of IBSA, MIE, SAM or other study abroad groups on campus, events that you do with that group (as long as they are directly promoting study abroad or helping the international community at K-State) could also for hours. Hours will vary depending on the activity, but a maximum of 4 hours total will be allowed for the activities completed using group events.

5. OTHER OPPORTUNITIES*: During the semester other major opportunities may arise to complete your hours. Hours will vary depending on activity. Some activities are as follows:  International Week  Week of Welcome for the Study Abroad Office  International Education Week  International Student Orientation (takes place the week before school starts)  Creating a step-by-step manuscript on ways to do fundraising activities for study abroad  Carrying out the fundraising activities for study abroad.  Video testimonials, facebook, twitter or audiobook entries with specific study abroad information and sharing of your experiences. (About 15-20 approved entries would count for 30 minutes of service).  Creating a blog or DVD (timed PowerPoint with music) of your study abroad experience. For DVD every 2 minutes = 1 hour, for a maximum of 2.5 hours (5 minutes). Blog hours will vary, but a general guideline is 10 entries = 1 hour of service. This is open to students on a first come first serve basis by city.  Create a PowerPoint about one of our exchange universities. Hours will vary based on the PowerPoint; students who follow the guidelines established by past PowerPoints should receive 2-4 hours of service. This is on a first come, first served basis for exchange universities for which we do not already have PowerPoints.  Creating a Flickr or Picasa site with information on your study abroad university, with good pictures and captions explaining them. You can also include an 'orientation' document of things to expect of the area. Every 30 good pictures with captions students may be able to use = 30 minutes of service to a maximum of 3 hours. This is open to students on a first come first serve basis by city.  Create an entry for the Kansas State University Study Abroad Travel Book: Every 6 quality entries =1 hour of service. This is basically writing down specific information about day trips that students can take, how to get to and from the airport (including cost), talk about accommodations students can use (including cost), entertainment and restaurants that you liked, and how to get there etc. You can come to the Study Abroad Office to look travel books to get an idea of the kind of things we are looking for. This is open to students on a first come first serve basis by city.  Create welcome packages for incoming exchange students. So basically a "Kansas State University travel book" about Manhattan. Again 6 entries = 1 hour of service.  Office help for hanging up posters, chalking sidewalks, international field trips etc).  Collaborate with an international student to present a coffee hour presentation or a speaker’s bureau presentation.  Go with an advisor to high schools promoting K-State’s study abroad program.  One-on-one presentations to K-State faculty members  Present to area high schools  Referring friends- refer 5 students (who have never been to the Study Abroad office before) to complete a peer advising session and receive 1 hour.

* All of these items are on a first come first serve basis and must be approved by the scholarship committee before you can earn hours for them.

** These activities will be those in which you will earn hours (with appropriate verification) while you are actually abroad.

6. HAVE YOUR OWN IDEAS? If you have your own ideas of ways in which you can contribute to the K- State international community and/or promote study abroad please let me know as it may count as volunteer hours too! Events not directly related to the Study Abroad Office will be considered on a case by case basis. Many students have created some wonderful resources they have come up with on their own; we’re always looking for new ideas!
