JOB TITLE: Fundraising Officer (Trust and Corporate)

SALARY: circa. £24,000

LOCATION: Durham Cathedral

ACCOUNTABLE TO: Head of Development

ACCOUNTABLE FOR: On occasion may be required to supervise volunteers in the office and at events.

KEY RELATIONSHIPS: Head of Development and Development team, Marketing and Events team, Cathedral donors, regional businesses and business membership organisations, and local/national charitable trusts.

BACKGROUND: Durham Cathedral is a place of worship, welcome and hospitality. As one of Britain’s favourite buildings the Cathedral welcomes over 600,000 people every year. The Cathedral started its first ever Development Programme in 2008 against which a total of £3.3 million has been raised to date to support the Cathedral’s work and mission. In 2013, the Cathedral launched a ground- breaking £10 million fundraising campaign to deliver Open Treasure; a major development project which will transform the way that visitors experience the Cathedral through the creation of a state of the art exhibition spaces within its Claustral buildings. To complement the new exhibitions, a rich programme of learning, outreach and public events will be available to engage people of all ages with the Cathedral and its collections. A total of £6.1 million has been raised for Open Treasure to date including a grant of £3.9 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

JOB SUMMARY: To be responsible for raising money in support of the Cathedral including Open Treasure, through the acquisition, development and retention of corporate and trust donors (up to £10K level). This includes researching prospects, planning and delivering fundraising campaigns, writing funding applications and sponsorship proposals, managing the Cathedral’s corporate stewardship programmes and stewarding all grants/donations secured. 1

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

General

1. Support the Head of Development in the delivery of the Cathedral’s Fundraising Strategy and development of associated action plans. 2. To objectively review the success and achievements against agreed targets, identifying strengths, weaknesses and areas for development. 3. To play an active role in the development and maintenance of processes to enable the effective functioning of the Development team. 4. To manage relationships with relevant internal departments and external agencies. 5. To ensure all relevant activity is carried out in accordance with Cathedral policies and procedures, Charity Law, Inland Revenue (Gift Aid) and Data Protection.

Human Resources

6. To supervise fundraising volunteers as required.

Trusts and Grant-making bodies

7. To build on relationships with existing low to mid-level trust supporters, writing reports to meet deadlines and submitting further applications for funding. 8. In liaison with the Development Manager (Major Gifts), to research, identify and approach trusts and foundations that have not previously supported the work of the Cathedral, building an annual calendar of key prospects. 9. To develop core generic trust proposals for areas of the Cathedral’s work that require funding. 10.To write tailored applications, addressing grant-making priorities or requirements as specified by individual trusts and foundations.

Corporate

11.To manage the Cathedral’s current low to mid-level corporate partnerships, suggesting a number of ways to build on these relationships, maximising engagement with employees at all levels. 12.In liaison with the Development Manager (Major Gifts) to identify and approach corporate prospects, securing financial contributions and the support of employees. 13.To promote sponsorship, partnership, corporate hospitality and employee volunteering opportunities at the Cathedral to the local and regional business community. 14.To write tailored proposals addressing individual corporate aims and objectives, and develop standard corporate agreements which can be adapted as required. 15.To compile case studies of existing Cathedral corporate supporters and use them to promote the Cathedral to other companies.

Administration

16.To develop and maintain reporting and application systems and share information appropriately with other members of the Development team.

2 17.To ensure the effective administration of grants/donations including database management.

Donor Care

18.To provide first-class stewardship of corporate and trust donors including writing reports in accordance with the terms and conditions established by donors, and requesting payments in a timely manner. 19.To deliver the highest standards of customer care and represent the Cathedral and its stakeholders appropriately at all times. 20.To monitor supporter feedback and raise appropriately with the Head of Development. 21.To plan and deliver corporate and other supporter events to thank donors for their support and promote stronger relationships with the Cathedral.

Marketing and Communication

22.To identify media and PR opportunities for corporate and trust donors in collaboration with the Marketing and Events team including ensuring suitable acknowledgements on the Cathedral website. 23.To write engaging copy for the Cathedral newsletter in order to promote corporate and trust giving. 24.To project manage the production of corporate fundraising campaigns, e.g. direct mail, including writing briefs, copywriting and editing, in collaboration with the Marketing and Events team. 25.To represent the Cathedral, as required, at events and with groups of supporters, including making presentations.

Other

26.To participate in internal/external meetings and attend training events and other functions as necessary. 27.To undertake any other reasonable duty consistent with the nature of the job and its level of responsibility.

This section outlines the requirements and qualities the post-holder needs in order to fulfil the post.
