Job Description / Responsibilities

Police Chief — Colonial Beach, VA (full time population 3,542 – summer population approx. 10,000)

Seeking energetic, intelligent individual with proven interpersonal and communication skills as demonstrated through verbal and written communication, to lead a state accredited law enforcement agency. The successful candidate develops policies and procedures for the department as mandated by law to ensure efficient operations and to implement directives from the Town Council or Town Manager, keeping with Virginia laws.

An analytical thinker, the Police Chief is required to work closely with other members of the Town leadership team to ensure the health, safety and general welfare of the Town’s citizens, residents and visitors.

Starting Salary $60,000

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree – preferably in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or a related field – is required. Master’s degree is desirable.

Minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in law enforcement and public safety as a sworn police officer certified by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services or equivalent agency from another state is required.

Knowledge and understanding of the principles of emergency preparedness, planning, coordination and management.

Completion of a national law enforcement management training program such as the FBI National Academy is desirable; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
