CAREER ACTION 6-4 Resume Draft
Directions: Review the sample resumes on pages 118-141. Mark the organizational schemes and sections of these models that are useful to you. Resumes typically should contain all the standard sections listed below. The optional sections should be included when they support your main job objective or when an employer requests them. Note how the sample resumes include differences in the section headings. Mark the headings that best suit your experiences and preferences.
Standard Resume Sections: . Name and Contact Information (no heading) . Objective or Profile . Work Experience . Qualifications . Education . Related Experience (or Activities)
Other Resume Sections to Consider: . Military Service . Awards and Honors . Associations and Memberships
Determine which organization is best for you. (If you have extensive work experience, the chronological organization might be best. If you have limited work experience but plenty of relevant skills, the functional or combination organization will highlight your skills.) Prepare a written or word processed rough draft of the content of your resume using the resume outline in Career Action 6-2 as a reference and starting point. Be selective about the quality and quantity of information you include. Make every word count. Emphasize your qualifications and measurable accomplishments, and include appropriate power words and keywords from Career Action 6-3. File your draft in your Career Management Files Binder.
