SECTION 09 72 00 – WALL COVERINGS

PART 1 - GENERAL

0.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS

A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

B. Specifications throughout all Divisions of the Project Manual are directly applicable to this Section, and this Section is directly applicable to them.

0.2 REFERENCE STANDARDS

A. The latest published edition of a reference shall be applicable to this Project unless identified by a specific edition date.

B. All reference amendments adopted prior to the effective date of this Contract shall be applicable to this Project.

C. All materials, installation and workmanship shall comply with all applicable requirements and standards.

0.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE

[ARCHITECT/ENGINEER MUST DELETE EVERTHING IN BLUE AND IN BRACKETS BEFORE PUBLISHING.] A. Fire Performance Characteristics: Provide wall coverings with the following surface burning characteristics as determined by testing identical products per ASTM E 84 by UL or other testing and inspecting organizations acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction. Identify wall coverings with appropriate markings of applicable testing and inspecting organization.

1. Flame Spread: 25 or less.

2. Smoke Developed: 450 or less.

[I B. Field Constructed Mock ups: Before installation, prepare mock ups for each finish on substrates required to verify selections made under sample submittals. Approved mock ups set quality standards for installation and aesthetic effect. Comply with the following requirements:

1. Use specified materials.

2. Locate mock ups as directed by Architect.

3. Retain and maintain mock ups in undisturbed condition as a standard for judging completed Work.

4. Accepted mock ups in undisturbed condition at time of Substantial Completion may become part of completed Work.

0.4 SUBMITTALS

A. Shop Drawings:

1. Showing location and extent of each wall covering type. Indicate termination points.

B. Product Data:

1. Submit manufacturer's product data and installation/maintenance instructions for all manufactured products and materials.

C. Samples:

1. Samples for initial selection purposes of each type of wall covering required, in manufacturer's standard sizes showing full range of colors, textures, and patterns available.

[A 2. Samples for verification purposes of each type, color, texture, and pattern of wall covering and molding accessory required, prepared on samples of size indicated below:

a. Full width sample, not less than 36 inches long, of each wall covering specified. Show complete pattern repeat.

b. 12 inch long sample of each molding accessory.

0.5 EXTRA MATERIALS

A. Furnish extra materials from same production runs as wall covering installed. Package materials with protective covering and identify with labels describing contents. Deliver extra materials to Owner.

1. Refer to Section 01 78 46 for Maintenance Material Requirements.

0.6 PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Maintain a constant temperature not less than 60 degrees F (16 degrees C) in installation areas for at least 10 days before and 10 days after installation.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

0.1 GENERAL

A. All materials shall meet or exceed all applicable referenced standards, federal, state and local requirements, and conform to codes and ordinances of authorities having jurisdiction.

B. Unless otherwise indicated, provide wall covering material conforming to the following physical requirements:

1. Vinyl Wall Covering Standard: FS CCC-W-408A and CFFA-W-101-D, Type II, medium duty, 20 ounce weight.

2. Durability Standard: ASTM F 793 for Category VI, Full Commercial Serviceability.

[R C. Where wallcovering is indicated for application on an "exterior" wall, provide factory perforated wallcovering having approximately 150 "Micro Perforations" per square inch.

0.2 MANUFACTURERS

A. The notes and schedules on the Drawings establish manufacturer and color/design required for the Project. Provide the products listed unless Architect approves products of other manufacturer specifically for this Project.

To establish standards of manufacture, operation, performance, and appearance, drawings and specifications are based on the specific manufacturer's products and color/patterns shown on the Drawings. If accepted in advance by the Architect, and subject to compliance with requirements, products of other manufacturers may also be acceptable.

0.3 ACCESSORIES

A. Manufacturer's standard for use with specific wall covering and substrate application.

B. Adhesive: Mildew resistant with Anti-bacterial additive, nonstaining, and strippable, for use with specific wall covering and substrate application indicated and as recommended by wall covering manufacturer.

[D C. Wall Liner: Manufacturer's standard nonwoven, synthetic underlayment.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

0.1 PREPARATION

A. Acclimatize wall covering materials by removing them from packaging in the installation areas not less than 24 hours before installation.

B. Follow manufacturer's printed instructions for surface preparation.

1. Prepare substrates to achieve a smooth, dry, clean surface free of flaking, unsound coatings, cracks, and defects.

2. Painted Surfaces: Treat areas susceptible to pigment bleeding.

3. Metals: If not factory primed, clean and apply primer recommended in writing by primer/sealer manufacturer and wall-covering manufacturer.

4. Moisture Content: Maximum of 5 percent on new plaster, concrete, and concrete masonry units when tested with an electronic moisture meter.

5. Prime new gypsum board with a recommended primer.

6. Allow new plaster to cure. Treat areas of high alkalinity.

C. Check painted surfaces for pigment bleeding. Sand gloss, semi gloss, and eggshell finishes with fine sandpaper.

[D D. Install wall liner, with no gaps or overlaps, where required by wall covering manufacturer. Form smooth wrinkle free surface for finished installation. Do not begin wall covering installation until wall liner has dried.

0.2 INSTALLATION

A. Installation shall meet or exceed all applicable federal, state and local requirements, referenced standards and conform to codes and ordinances of authorities having jurisdiction.

B. All installation shall be in accordance with manufacturer’s published recommendations.

C. Install wall covering with no gaps or overlaps.

[R D. Match pattern 6 feet above finish floor.

E. Install seams vertical and plumb at least 6 inches from outside corners and 3 inches from inside corners. No horizontal seams.

F. Fully bond wall-covering to substrate. Remove air bubbles, wrinkles, blisters, and other defects.

G. Trim edges for color uniformity, pattern match, and tight closure at seams and edges. Butt seams.

0.3 CLEANING

A. Remove excess adhesive at finished seams, perimeter edges, and adjacent surfaces.

B. Use cleaning methods recommended by the wall covering manufacturer.

C. Replace strips that cannot be cleaned.
