New Constructions since 2000 10 3 Preface In 2011 and 2012 the giant J class yachts of yesteryear, the surviving original boats, replicas of historic boats and newly built J yachts, will meet again for regattas recalling the legendary America’s Cup encounters of the Thirties in what is sure to be an historic reunion. Surprisingly, the J class is well represented in yachting journals and on the internet but in print only in specialized monographs dealing with detailed aspects or individual boats. There seems to be no systematic overview of the history of the original yachts and what became of them or of recent new construction activity. This publication seeks to fill that gap. I am grateful to yacht builders and designers, yachting associations and many individuals for providing me with needed information 1. Clearly, a short overview such as this risks committing errors of omission. I hope that the reader will forgive any such unintended lapse. The Westward Cup Renaissance of the Big Class Regatta By Gerhard Standop They were kings, princes, lords, industrialists and upwardly mobile businessmen, owners of factories, department stores, railways and aeroplane manufactories. Their wealth had made them yacht owners, and they duelled with one another on the waves. At first it was just for fun, but later more was at stake: notoriety, prestige and influence – or the America’s Cup or victory in other regattas. This has been going on for well over a century. Initially the yachts were small wooden craft with modest sheet built by local shipyards, often as a sideline to the real business of building ships for the navy. In 1851 the New York Yacht Club schooner America defeated 17 British opponents in a race around the Isle of Wight, winning the Royal Yacht Squadron’s Hundred Guinea Cup. Renamed the America’s Cup in 1857, what is today the world’s oldest sport trophy was born. Yacht clubs began to issue challenges for possession of the Cup. In the course of the following years and decades England and the United States vied for supremacy in yacht-building and in yachting competition. Price was no object, then as now. Serious yachtsmen have simple tastes. They are always satisfied with the best, the fastest, the biggest boats. As competitions proliferated, talented yacht-builders on both sides of the Atlantic developed ever new ideas as to how to make sailboats faster. INTRODUCTION In spite of the utilitarian tendencies of the present age, it is fortunately no longer necessary to argue in behalf of sport; even the busiest of busy Americans have at last learned the neces- sity for a certain amount of relaxation and rec- reation, and that the best way to these lies in the pursuit of some form of outdoor sport. While each has its stanch adherents, who pro- claim its superiority to all others, the sport of yachting can perhaps show as much to its credit as any. As a means to perfect physical development, one great point in all sports, it has the advantage of being followed outdoors in the bracing atmos- phere of the sea; and while it involves severe physical labor and at times actual hardships, it fits its devotees to withstand and enjoy both. In the matter of competition, the salt and savor of all sport, yachting opens a wide and varied field. In other words, Lewis viewed her as state of the art and destined for greatness. Which, of course, is exactly what she was. John Masefield, “Sea Fever” My maternal great grandfather James Lauriston Lewis was born in 1864, the eldest son of a hosiery manufacturer James Winterbotham Lewis (1825-1902) of Nottigham. He inherited a substantial share in J. B. Lewis & Sons, Ltd., and actively ran the company until his retirement around the age of 50, ostensibly to rear Red Devon cattle at his estate of Coombe Cross, Horsington, Somerset.
