MAY 2016 NEWSLETTER ______

Sunday, May 8th MOTHER’S DAY Celebrate your mom. Worship with her Sunday at 10am

Everything Mom

How did you find the energy, Mom To do all the things you did, To be teacher, nurse and counselor To me, when I was a kid.

How did you do it all, Mom, Be a chauffeur, cook and friend, Yet find time to be a playmate, I just can’t comprehend.

I see now it was love, Mom That made you come whenever I'd call, Your inexhaustible love, Mom And I thank you for it all.

By Joanna Fuchs OUR CHURCH IN ACTION

News from Hatfield Church of the Brethren Food Cupboard Over the past several weeks our Food Pantry has been blessed with many wonderful donations from our community. Our friends at Saint Marie Goretti gave a cash donation of over $350, in addition to the many bags of personal care items they recently donated. We also received a $2,500 grant from ShopRite, to spend at Philabundance. This is the fourth year we have received this grant from ShopRite. And our SUN Garden volunteers would like to thank Pennypack Farms and Julie McCabe for donating seeds. Because of this donation, we now have broccoli and cauliflower seedlings that will soon be in the garden. Our friends at Indian Creek COB are putting together men’s care packages in honor of Fathers’ Day. The items will be distributed to the men at our pantry in June. If you would like to help out, items such as shaving cream, razors, men’s deodorant, soap and shampoo can be dropped off at the pantry or at ICCOB, care of Pam Bedell. Our pantry is always looking for new volunteers, and I’m happy to welcome Michelle Clemmer from ICCOB to our group of dedicated volunteers. Michelle has been helping us out on Monday nights, and I know we all appreciate her willingness to do whatever needs to be done, always with a smile! Thanks Michelle! And speaking of volunteers, we could really use a few more helpers for our Saturday and Monday pantry hours, especially as summer vacation season approaches. We are open the third Saturday from 10:00am – 11:00am and the fourth Monday from 6:30pm – 7:30pm each month. If you have never volunteered at the pantry before and are wondering what it’s like, here are a few of the things our volunteers are responsible for:  Help pantry clients sign-in, fill out necessary paperwork, and update client information in an excel spreadsheet;

 Assist clients one-on-one as they shop in the choice pantry;

 Work at a table where clients select meat, eggs, produce and baked goods

 Work at the ‘check-out’ table where all items need to be bagged and weighed

 Help carry bags to the car;

 Break-down and recycle cardboard boxes;

 Re-stock and organize shelves

There’s something for everyone to do, and many of these jobs are suitable for kids and teenagers --- what a great way to keep them busy this summer!! If you know someone who would like to volunteer, just let me know. Have a great month! Kelly Poehlmann NEWS from Friendship House Day Care Center Believe it or not, April is on its way out and May has crept in quickly! April was a great month. Our themes: Nature’s Life Cycles and Brilliant Botanicals: We planted some wildflowers and added them to our Friendship House garden in the big playground. The kids will take responsibility for taking care of the flowers in this garden making sure the plants are growing big and strong. We learned the different parts of the plant and also what they need to grow. High in the Sky: We learned all about different types of birds and that most birds fly, but there are some that do not. We talked about what we would do if we could fly and where we would go. We went on nature walks and discovered the different types of birds that live around here as well. Our Mother Earth: We celebrated the Earth and even had a trash walk on Friday to clean it up. We talked about reduce, reuse, recycle and other ways that we can help keep the Earth clean for generations to come. Some of us even made new things out of old recyclables to show to our friends! The Ugly Bug Ball: We talked all about different types of bugs and had a special bug picnic. We ate our lunch outside and shared our crumbs with the bugs. Our butterflies came out of their chrysalides this week as well, so we will be releasing them into nature next week, we wish them all the best on their adventures! The month of May starts off with May Festival Fun. We will learn about the May Pole celebration and spend time practicing for our Mother’s Day Celebration on Friday May 6th. Pandas will perform at 4:30 and Teddy Bears, Little Lambs and Young Cubs at 4. Light refreshments following. The next theme is Excellent Ecosystems. We will discuss the different ecosystems in our area and how they work. Quiver Farms will also be bringing in eggs and we will take care of them until they hatch into baby chicks! We are very excited to see the life cycle of the chick and to take care of our new friends! Next is Under the Sea. Wednesday the 18th we will have an ocean theme day which will be very exciting, make sure to wear your best beach wear on to celebrate! This week we will be discovering all the creatures that live under the sea and will get to observe our beta fish too. Magnificent Music is next. We will revolve all around music, dancing, instruments and singing. We will form bands, learn different styles of music, and dance until we drop! We will study our favorite musicians and discover why they are so important to us. The last week in May will be Proud to be an American. School will be closed Monday, May 30th in honor of Memorial Day. The rest of the week we will show our patriotic spirit by wearing red, white and blue, and using different art mediums to create collages. Thank you again for your continued support of Friendship House. We have been working hard to better our school in every way, and we are continuing our work with Keystone Stars. We welcome our newest teacher, Miss Micah. She will be working with and taking over for Miss Tianna until she goes back to school in August.
