The Board of Trustees of the Chabot-Las Positas Community College District Announces the Position of President Chabot College

Opportunities Located in Hayward, the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area, in the midst of many institutions of higher education and a thriving economic environment, Chabot College offers many opportunities.

In the next 5-10 years, the Chabot College president will have the opportunity to:

Provide leadership in a dynamic educational environment with a talented and multicultural student body, an outstanding faculty known for high standards of teaching, and a dedicated and knowledgeable staff;

Commit to excellence and service;

Be an advocate for academic and student support programs that are among the best in the state;

Lead an ambitious facilities modernization program;

Lead the college in attracting new students from local multicultural communities;

Nurture a campus climate that values diversity in its students, staff, and community;

Continue to recruit and retain highly qualified and diverse faculty and staff;

In collaboration with the district Chancellor, build an organizational structure with clearly defined roles and responsibilities;

Work with a chancellor and new president of Las Positas College;

Promote and develop training opportunities for a diversified workforce in a broad-based economy;

Strengthen collaborations and partnerships with local community groups, governmental agencies, and educational institutions in a college service area that spans five local communities;

Attract resources to the college by supporting the continued growth of the College Foundation and eliciting the participation and support of Chabot's large, successful alumni population. Challenges The challenges that will greet the new Chabot College president reflect the internal priorities of the college and the external dynamics that shape community colleges in California.

The new president will be engaged in:

Developing and implement strategies for enrollment growth and retention;

Facilitating collegiality, trust, and respect among all of the college constituencies;

Promoting a sense of unity and pride within the College;

In collaboration with the District, establish a process that will lead to a balanced budget;

Encouraging open communication and dialogue across campus;

Engaging all segments in positive and constructive shared governance;

Strengthening the connection between the College and the local community;

Expanding the resource base of the College by generating new funding sources;

Developing and maintaining rapport with the new leadership of the District and Las Positas College;

Continuing to integrate technological advancements into academic, student, and administrative systems.

Candidate’s Profile/Qualifications The new president of Chabot College will need to demonstrate:

Strong visionary leadership with a high degree of personal integrity and commitment to the campus and the community;

A clear focus on teaching, learning, and academic excellence as institutional priorities;

The ability to lead an institution that values and respects a multicultural student population and an understanding of the processes, programs, and services necessary to facilitate their access and success;

A commitment to maintain high visibility on campus and in the community, with a willingness to represent the College in each of its local communities;

The ability to serve as an advocate for the College and to promote it in the media and the community;

The ability to appreciate and use effectively the strengths and talents of individuals in the campus community;

The ability to foster trust and respect among all members of the College community; A thorough understanding of the core value of shared governance and each constituencies’ role in the process;

Effective communication and listening skills;

A genuine appreciation and encouragement of student and staff diversity, and sensitivity to broader, related issues;

The ability to hire a dedicated and productive management staff and to lead and motivate an entire management team;

Successful experience in budgeting, resource allocation, fiscal management, facilities, and strategic planning;

A sense of humor.

Required Qualifications An earned doctorate from an accredited institution is required.

A minimum of four years successful senior-level administrative experience in an institution of higher education;

Demonstrated knowledge of effective teaching and learning processes at the college level;

Strong record of community service and involvement;

Understanding of laws and regulations pertaining to California Community Colleges;

Higher education teaching/counseling experience preferred.

The Position The President of Chabot College serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the College and reports to the Chancellor of the Chabot-Las Positas Community College District.

The President will be expected to provide strong visionary leadership. The President should demonstrate a high degree of integrity, innovation, and commitment to shared governance.

The President will serve as leader and advocate for the college in a growing community adapting to changes in the new economy and innovations in technology within a two-college district.

Chabot College Chabot College primarily serves residents of Alameda County in the East Bay Area including the district communities of Castro Valley, Hayward, San Leandro, San Lorenzo and Union City. In these five communities, Chabot College serves nine high schools, public and private, plus alternative and adult schools.

Major features of Chabot College include a planetarium, art gallery, and athletic complex with an Olympic sized swimming pool, a child development center, radio station, television studio, art and music studios and a 1,500-seat Performing Arts Center. The College has an award-winning faculty and staff who are supported by an active Faculty Senate, Classified Senate, staff development programs and advisory committees in many of its academic programs.

Chabot College is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Chabot College is also accredited by the Council on Dental Education, American Dental Association, the Committee on Allied Health Education, and Accreditation in collaboration with the American Hospital Health Information Management Association and the American Medical Assisting Association. The Program in Nursing is accredited by the California Board of Registered Nursing.

The Community The Chabot-Las Positas Community College District is in its 45th year of providing higher education opportunities to residents of the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.

The voters approved the formation of a “junior college district” on January 10, 1961, with the first board of trustees elected on April 18, 1961. The District boundary encompasses the communities of Castro Valley, Dublin, Hayward, Livermore, Pleasanton, San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Sunol and Union City.

Located across the Bay from San Francisco, nearby major interstate highways and the Bay Area Rapid Transit System (BART) place the College within easy access of any destination.

Higher education institutions within a short commuting distance include the California State Universities of East Bay, San Francisco and San Jose; the University of California at Berkeley; Stanford University, Holy Names College, John F. Kennedy University, Mills College, Saint Mary’s College, and many others.

The nearby performing and fine arts centers of San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley offer a wide variety of cultural events throughout the year. Sports enthusiasts are within minutes of the Network Associates Coliseum Complex, current home of the Oakland Raiders, Oakland A’s, and the Golden State Warriors. Pleasure boating in San Francisco Bay equals the best in the world, and summer and winter sports are only three hours away in Lake Tahoe, Yosemite National Park, and the High Sierras.

However, to ensure full consideration, individuals should submit a complete application package prior to November 1, 2007. The Presidential Search Committee will begin its review of applications shortly after this date. This is a confidential search process.

The application packet must include the one-page summary sheet available at www.clpccd.org and a five to seven page application letter in which candidates should succinctly state how they would address the identified priorities and how they meet the ideal characteristics identified in the announcement.

SELECTION PROCESS All completed applications and materials will be screened by the search committee which includes faculty, staff, administrators, students and community members to ensure that the minimum required qualifications stated in the job announcement are met.

Those candidates who meet the minimum required qualifications and most closely reflect the desired job related priorities and ideal characteristics will be invited to the District for an interview.

The Chancellor will interview the finalists and public forums will be held at Chabot College.

The new President will be expected to assume duties on or about February 1, 2008.

Salary and Benefits Salary, length of contract and other terms and conditions of employment will be determined by the Board of Trustees.
