UNIMARC/Bibliographic, 3rd Edition: Cumulated Errata 2010 June 11

The following table cumulates the errata for UNIMARC/Bibliographic, 3rd edition, compiled by the Comité français UNIMARC (CfU), dated 2010 March 1, without highlighting; by Mr. Alan Hopkinson, distributed on 2009 December 22, highlighted in blue; and by Ms. Mirna Willer, distributed on 2010 March 15, highlighted in green; with page numbers added and additional comments from the Permanent UNIMARC Committee (PUC) meeting held in Lyon, France, on 2010 March 29-30, highlighted in yellow. (Ms. Willer’s errata and Mr. Hopkinson’s errata are both found in documents dated 2009 December 31.) Typographical and other minor errors in this cumulative document itself have been corrected silently and the table has been ordered by page number. Page numbers refer to the UNIMARC Manual Bibliographic Format, 3rd edition, edited by Alan Hopkinson (München: K.G. Saur, 2008).

In the course of working on this, I happened to notice inconsistencies among the X-- block pages. All of those pages had a section entitled “Definition and Scope of Fields,” except for 2-- (“Description and Scope of Fields”) and 7-- (“Definition and Scope of Block”). All had a section “Notes on Field Contents,” except for 2--, which had “Notes on Contents of Block;” the 8-- block didn’t include that section. These and related inconsistencies don’t appear to be intentional, as far as I can tell.

Comité français UNIMARC – errata for UNIMARC/Bibliographic 3rd edition (as of 2010, March, the 1st) Some corrections proposed follow general principles:  *** the standards must be cited in the ISO form ;***  Retain full form in Appendix M, use short “ISO XXX” references in the text. The French translation will continue to have the full form of references throughout.  revisions relating to ISBD consolidation  Yes.  ***we propose to add systematically the online references in the text, instead of giving a reference to the appendices of 3rd edition, who are already out-of-date (this also in order to facilitate the consultation of UNIMARC format, especially if we manage to have an online version)***  The French translation will also add links.  In future editions, code lists will not be included because they so quickly go out of date. Instead, there will be references/links to online code lists.  consistency between different fields (for example for 0-- fields, we added to the fields where it makes sense the provisions given for other fields like 020, that is : 1 when only an erroneous number is available, the field may contain only $z without $a (or $b if $a contains a country code) ;

1 2 if the number is used also as record identifier in field 001, it must be also given in the field appropriate to the type of number (added in fields 014, 022 and 035)  All errata that follow were accepted (meaning they were discussed in the March 2010 PUC meeting in Lyon), unless otherwise noted.
