2. Second and five at the A-40. A34 catches a toss from A17 and heads around the right end. Lead back A45 is leading interference for A34 when he is “blown up” by B23 at the A-38 by a vicious block in front and at the knees by B23. This turns A34 to the inside where he is tackled for a loss by B55 at the A-35.

3. Third and eight at the A-2. A78 is engaged with B98 as he attempts to get to A17 who has dropped straight back in an attempt to throw a pass. Near the back of the EZ, A78 forces B98 over the end line. A78 continues his pursuit of B98 and contacts him again at point that is two yards behind the end line. A17 then completes a pass to A88 at the A15 where he is immediately downed.

4. Second and thirteen at the B-33. A17’s handoff attempt is fumbled and the ball is loose at the B-38 when B77 kicks it forward and OOB at the B-45.

5. Third and seven at the B-47. The score is tied. Four seconds remain in the game. A17’s pass is intercepted by B23, As B23 races for the EZ and an apparent victory, he turns and runs backwards beginning at the A-20 and waves to the opposing bench. 6. Third and five at the B-20. A17’s pass is intercepted by B23 at the B-3 and his momentum carries him into the team B EZ. At this moment the clock shows 0:09 seconds left in the half.

1. Third and seven at the B-47. A17 is attempting to pass the ball and rolls to his right leaving the tackle box. Unable to find an open receiver, he throws the ball at the feet of A34 at the A-48 who is engaged with B98. A38 has his back to A17 and never sees the ball.

RULING: A 4/7 at the B-47/snap/40. Legal grounding of the pass by A17. A34 was “in the area” and is not required to have a reasonable opportunity to catch the ball as in years past.

RULING: A 3/10 at the A-35/Running Clock/40. The contact from the front and below the waist by B23 is legal as the ball had not gone more than 5 yards beyond the NZ and A45 was not in position to receive a backwards pass. Whether or not the blocking zone is in existence at the time of the block is irrelevant per the most recent change to the blocking below the waist rule which can be found on the CFO website.

RULING: Safety, 2 points for team B. A free kick at the A-20. A78 committed a personal foul when he initiated contact against an opponent who was OOB. The spot of the foul is defined as where the blocker crossed the boundary line. Since this spot is in the EZ enforcement of the penalty results in a safety.

4. Second and thirteen at the B-33. A17’s handoff attempt is fumbled and the ball is loose at the B-38 when B77 kicks it forward and OOB at the B-45.

RULING: A 2/3 at the B-23/Ready/25. Illegally kicking the ball is a 10 yard penalty starting in 2011. It does not include an automatic first down.

5. Third and seven at the B-47. The score is tied. Four seconds remain in the game. A17’s pass is intercepted by B23, As B23 races for the EZ and an apparent victory, he turns and runs backwards beginning at the A-20 and waves to the opposing bench. After arriving in the EZ and spontaneously celebrating the presumed victory with his team mates, B23 takes off his helmet, and bows to the crowd.

RULING: B 1/10 at the 50/Extend the Period/25. B23 has committed two unsportsmanlike fouls, one a live-ball foul the other a dead-ball foul. They will both be enforced and the period will be extended. B23 is disqualified.

6. Third and five at the B-20. A17’s pass is intercepted by B23 at the B-3 and his momentum carries him into the team B EZ. B23 attempts to return the ball, but is hit and fumbles the ball which rolls into the field of play where it is then muffed back into the EZ 2011 Refstripes.com NCAA Quiz #3

by A44 in an attempt to recover it. The loose ball is muffed again by team B and eventually rolls OOB across the sideline in the EZ.

RULING: Safety, two points for team A. B free kick at the B-20. Although the initial action that put the ball into the EZ had all the makings of the momentum rule, the ball did not remain behind the goal line, so no momentum exception is applicable. The impetus that put the ball into the EZ the final time was B23’s fumble, therefore team B is charged with a safety.

7. Second and seven at the B-37. Score is A10-B7 in the second quarter. Team A completes a pass to the B-20. With no time-outs left in the half and the clock showing sixteen seconds remaining, team A rushes to the line to get off a play. The ball is placed ready-for-play and the Referee starts the game clock. As team A gets set and the snap is imminent, the side judge observes that A88 had not been between the nine-yard marks. At this moment the clock shows 0:09 seconds left in the half.

RULING: This is a dead-ball foul simultaneous with the snap against A88 for not being within the nine-yard marks and that stopped the clock with less than a minute left in the half. This invokes the ten second run-off rule, and since team A has no time-outs remaining, the half is over.
