OVERVIEW: Our physical education program is designed to increase physical fitness, develop fundamental and advanced motor skills, improve self-image, and promote positive social interaction through a variety of sports and leisure activities. Our goal is to promote and encourage life-long physical activity through positive experiences.

Expectations All students will be expected to participate in daily activities, fitness journaling, weekly physical fitness tests or quizzes, and written tests or quizzes on each unit of activity (football, basketball, volleyball, etc.).

STATE FITNESS TEST: All students in grades five, seven and nine are required to take the PFT, whether or not they are enrolled in physical education. They will be required to participate in the FITNESSGRAM, a comprehensive, health-related physical fitness battery developed by the Cooper Institute. The primary goal of the FITNESSGRAM is to assist students in establishing lifetime habits of regular physical activity.

The FITNESSGRAM®is composed of the following six fitness areas: Aerobic Capacity – 1 mile run Abdominal Strength and Endurance – Curl-ups Upper Body Strength and Endurance – push-ups /the hang Body Composition – BMI Trunk Extensor Strength and Flexibility – Trunk lift Flexibility – Shoulder or hamstring flexibility

GRADING POLICY Attendance and Grading Policy  Students earn ten points each day for effort/participation, behavior, attitude, uniform and punctuality  Five excused absences will not affect your participation points – this does NOT apply for tests/quizzes MIDDLE SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION SYLLABUS  If you do not participate (sick or absent) you DO NOT receive daily participation points (first 5 sick days or absences are waived).  After five absences, 10 points will be deducted for each additional absence or excused non-participation.  Excused absences can be made up by participating in a make-up activity offered once each quarter and/or extra credit assignments found on Jupiter grades.

Non-Suits 1st Offense = Warning and loss of 10 points 3rd Offense = N on report card and loss of 10 points 4th Offense = U on report card and loss of 10 points

Tardies will alter your grade in the following manner: 1 tardy = minus 3 points 3 + tardies = minus 3 points each and a detention

Make-up Work / Extra Credit = Quarterly 1. Unexcused Absences (including suspensions) may not be made up. 2. Extra credit can be earned on a designated “Extra Credit Run” once a quarter 3. Running quizzes can be made up with a timed run on a designated “Make up Day” once a quarter 4. There are no make-ups for the make-up sessions. Plan ahead!

GRADES Grades will be posted weekly on Jupiter Grades. Students will take written PE tests and quizzes through Juno, a section of Jupiter Grades. Students are expected to know how to log into Jupiter with their own personal account username and password. Students will not be able to access Juno tests with their parents’ username and password.
