ORANGE COUNTY COUNCIL-HIGH ADVENTURE TEAM ANNOUNCES

SPRING BASIC BACKPACKING COURSE (starts March 2, 2018)

Do you enjoy backpacking? Maybe you have never been backpacking, but want to get started? Taking Scouts into the great outdoors is fun, exciting, and is a great development tool for youth. Whatever your level of backpacking experience, from none to expert, this course will provide you with important information to get started guiding Scouts on a backpacking trek. Come join your fellow Scouters in the fun!

The Basic Backpacking Course is comprised of three parts:

Part 1 – Classroom Training (starts Friday evening – March 2 @ 5:00 PM and continues all day Saturday – March 3). Classroom training will be conducted at the Orange County Council-Boy Scouts of America (1211 E. Dyer Rd., Santa Ana, CA 92705) and consists of lectures, hands-on demonstrations and equipment round robins covering backpacks, tents, clothing, footwear, sleeping systems, stoves and cook gear, wilderness electronics, backpack cooking and food, water treatment, map and compass, introduction to wilderness first aid training, critter encounters and food protection, planning a backpack with Scouts including adult leadership, and implementing “High Adventure” into your unit.

Part 2 – Day Hike with Instructors (Sunday – March 4 or Saturday, March 10). The day hike will include map and compass fieldwork. Participants need attend only one of the two scheduled dates.

Part 3 – Overnight Backpack with Instructors (dates throughout March and April – most are a Saturday through Sunday trek, however, there will also be one Friday through Saturday option…for dates and details go to the first link below… dates will be set by January 1). The overnight backpack with your instructor and student team is the culmination of the Basic Backpacking Course. This two-day experience will give participants the opportunity to apply what they have learned in a supportive environment.
