St John’s Court Monthly News Letter

June 2016

1 We would like to welcome the following Residents to St John’s Court & hope that they are Happy & Comfortable in their new home. I’m sure you will all make them feel welcome & help them to settle into their new home: Winnie Wilkes & Pauline Heath

Sadly we say goodbye to: Heather Grafton sadly passed away & Margaret Jones who has moved into another home & we hope she will be happy & settled. They will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by everyone who knew them. A butterfly will be placed on the tree of remembrance in the conservatory for residents who pass away & the book of remembrance is available with their picture for those who would like to write their condolences & memories.

We welcome new staff members: Charlotte Evans who has joined the care team from Housman Court to gain more experience in nursing care.

We hope that they will be happy in their new roles & I’m sure you will all welcome them & help them to settle in.

All residents Birthdays are celebrated with a Card from all at St John’s Court & a Birthday Cake. If families wish to stay for lunch or have a room made available for family to hold a get together then please let us know.

Thank you: A member of the team has kindly donated plants for the planters in the back garden which has brightened up the area beautifully & made it a much nicer space for the ladies & gentlemen to sit in & enjoy the summer days. Some of the ladies & gentlemen really enjoyed planting them & talking about the different varieties & what they used to have in their garden. Thank you very much for your kindness, it is appreciated.

St John’s Fundraising: We currently have guess the amount of sweets in the jar to raise much needed funds for the Residents Welfare fund so please have a go, it is £1.00 per guess. For further information or fund raising suggestions please speak with Heather, Doreen, Ffion or any other member of the team. Thank you to everyone who has supported us & Good Luck!

2 Employee of the Month: I would like to thank all of the team at St John’s Court as you all work really hard to make it a lovely home for the residents & a happy place to work.

I would like to thank everyone for their nominations which were absolutely lovely. The winner of Employee of the Month for May is: Ben Line

Ben was presented with a certificate & a gift. Well Done Ben & thank you for making a difference.

The nominations reasons were:  He has taken to the job well considering he is new to care. He has a good relationship with residents & always goes out of his way & never leaves until he knows everything is up to date & correct.  Puts himself out for residents & members of the team, nothing seems a problem for Ben.

Other members of the team nominated were:  Tracey Cooper – always eager to help & have a chat with residents & a laugh, you can se they love her, you don’t hear her complain & she is a good carer.  Lesley Lewis – she is doing really well in her HCA role & makes everyone smile & laugh.  Zoe Olds – she is hard working, bubbly & never complains.  Trish Spence – whilst going about her laundry & housekeeping role she always makes residents drinks & takes residents out shopping in her own time.

Planned Events for June:

3  Tuesdays – Pet Therapy – Maisie the Black Labrador visits  Tuesdays & Thursdays – Bromsgrove School visit for Games Afternoon & Crafts  Thursday 2nd June – Residents & Relatives meeting to be held in the Dining Room at 3.00pm & in the conservatory at 6.00pm  Monday 6th June – National Carers week Awards Ceremony – in the Dining Room at 2.30pm. After the success of last years Awards afternoon we will be holding the same event this year in recognition of the hard work all team members at St John’s put into making a difference to the ladies & gentlemen’s lives here. There will be two Trustees visiting to give out the awards & a photographer from the local paper followed by Afternoon Tea. Please put your completed nominations in the box in reception – nomination forms can also be found in reception.  Tuesday 7th June – Afternoon tea with Age UK. Two members of the Age UK team will be visiting as they want to build community links with us & ladies & gentlemen who live at St John’s, relatives, friends & team members are welcomed to join us.  Thursday 9th June – Entertainment in the Dining Room by the Duo Me & My Girl at 2.00pm followed by a Cuppa & Cake Meeting with Pat the Head Cook at 3.15pm to discuss meals & suggestions.  Tuesday 14th June – Minibus trip hopefully to Cannon Hill Park & we will be taking a picnic with us to hopefully enjoy whilst sat in the park – weather permitting.  Thursday 16th June – Tai- Chi class & movement to music held by Alan in the dining room at 11.00am. This is very popular so please join us.  Friday 17th June – National Care Home Open Day – we will be visited by Sajid Javid – MP who will join us for Afternoon Tea & a chat in the Dining Room at 2.30pm please come along & put your thoughts & views to Sajid.  Thursday 30th June – Monthly Information Coffee Morning in the Dining Room at 11.00am. This months topic is Medication & the information morning will be led by Faye Upton – Deputy manager & Lisa Dews – HCA who are both the Medication champions. They will be on hand to discuss different medications & the importance of ensuring they are taken correctly & any side effects which you may experience & what to do.

Information Morning coffee/Afternoon Teas: We have arranged monthly morning coffee or afternoon tea information days which will be held on the last Thursday of the Month. All residents, relatives, team members & people in the community (they are in the local paper) are invited to attend these events which are being hosted by our Champions who go above & beyond to ensure that changes to benefit the residents take place & changes are cascaded to the rest of the team. Cuppa & Cake Meetings with the Cook: The very popular Cuppa & Cake meetings continue with Pat our Cook alternate months & these are listed below:  Thursday 9th June  Thursday 11th August  Thursday 13th October  Thursday 1st December Residents, relatives & members of the team are all invited to these informal meetings to discuss meal options & to make suggestions & requests to help with future mean planning & to keep everyone informed.

Residents & Family Meeting: The minute from the last meeting are on the notice board if you would like to have a look. The next residents & family meeting will be on Thursday 3rd March at 11.00am & 6.00pm, everyone is welcome to attend. The planned residents & relatives meetings during the year are as below but may be subject to change:  Thursday 2nd June – 3.00pm & 6.00pm  Saturday 2nd July – 11.00am  Thursday 8th September – 11.00am & 6.00pm  Saturday 12th November – 11.00am  Tuesday 6th December – 3.00pm & 6.00pm

5  Thursday 5th May - A lovely Sunny afternoon in the River side Garden at Webbs on our monthly trip out. The weather was very good se we were able to stroll around the Riverside Gardens followed by Afternoon Tea in the Restaurant

 Monday 9th May – Bon Marche came to do a fashion show for us & many residents enjoyed choosing their new clothes from a wide range which were on sale.

The choice was endless but everyone enjoyed having a good shop!

 Thursday 12th May – Nostalgia Music Fun in the dining room 2.30pm-3.30pm. We were entertained by the Duo who played many tunes & sang a wide selection of songs throughout the decades & there was lots of audience participation.

 15th – 21st May – Dementia Awareness Week – information on Dementia was available from the Dementia Champions Lesley Lewis & Petra Fessey  Saturday 21st may – FA Cup Final – Residents enjoyed watching the annual football FA Cup Final with a drink & a few cheers along the way.  Thursday 26th May – Afternoon Tea – information Afternoon which was led by Laura Wilkes & Faye Upton who are the Safeguarding Champions. This took place in the Dining Room at 2.30pm with afternoon tea & there was lots of information available about the types of abuse & how to reduce the risk & what to do if you suspect abuse.  28th May – British Wine week – we will celebrate with a Cheese & Wine evening where there will be a selection of wines & cheeses to taste.

Basic Facts about June:

Another alternate birthstone for June is moonstone. It is considered a sacred stone in India. Moonstone varies in color from clear to bluish white or peach. It is a symbol of health and longevity.

Roses come in a wide variety of colors. Each color has a different meaning. Red roses symbolize love, white roses symbolize innocence and purity, and light pink roses are a symbol of admiration or sympathy.
