Homework for the Week of January 19-23 A.P. Psychology MONDAY – A.P. PSYCH Warm-Up Type 1: When you have stressful thoughts, how do you deal with them? Does this match any defense mechanisms we’ve discussed?

AGENDA:  Have out NeoFreudian section of handout for me to check. Watch Dentist video for example of sublimation.  Go over Defense Mechanisms Matching Sheet together.  You and a partner will be assigned a defense mechanism. You must create a short skit to demonstrate the one that you were assigned. The class will guess which one you are showing.  Finish Freud Psychoanalytic Theory PowerPoint –  The NeoFreudians and their theories  Evaluating and Updating Freud’s Theory

ASSIGNMENTS:  Study Freud’s theories and the NeoFreudians for a quiz TOMORROW.  Read pages 469-473 on Humanistic Perspective on Personality. PSYCH Warm-Up Type 1: What do you think is the major motivator behind people’s actions?

AGENDA:  Quiz over Freud and the Neo Freudians. – Grade as a class with green pens.  Count off by fours. Read and write a 3 paragraph summary of at least three major findings/facts from one of three articles you are assigned to read in class. Afterwards, if time allows, share your findings with people who read a different article. WEDNESDAY – A.P. PSYCH Warm-Up Type 1: Describe a time in your life where your efforts made little difference. What effect did those feelings have on you?

AGENDA:  Go over Humanist Perspective PowerPoint – Have out your questions for me to check.  Do you agree with the major principles of Humanistic Theory?  Can a person truly become self-actualized? What is your current perceived self? What is your ideal self? How close are the two (congruence)?  If time allows: Discussion on Neal (boy who wants to be an actor despite dad’s disapproval) from Dead Poet Society.

AGENDA:  Review Quiz over pages 4-16 Origins of Psych, Major Perspectives, Specialty Areas

 Review over Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory PowerPoint – Fill out your Social Cognitive FIB Notes as we go over. See Reciprocal Determinism Transparency  Mary Bandura’s experiment on control vs. no control when it comes to intelligence and its effects on efficacy.  Difference between self-efficacy and self-esteem. External vs. Internal Locus of Control – An example from Schindler’s List when Schindler talks to Goeth’s maid, Helen in the cellar (4:00). Discuss in groups the following questions: 1. Inmates of prisons and concentration camps have little control over their lives. What do you think are the long term implications of this on them? 2. How do you think one’s gender, age and race might influence one’s feeling of control? How might religious faith influence one’s feeling of control? 3. Do you feel you have more control in some areas of life more than others? Describe and explain one difference? 4. What are the most important factors influencing one’s sense of control? 5. o Take the North Dakota Null Hypothesis Test and turn in to me before you leave so I can find your results for tomorrow. o Complete Personality Plus Test on yourself and have someone else take it on you as well. Choose the word that describes from the four listed across each row. Compare the results. Why are they the same or different? Have this for tomorrow.

AGENDA:  Demonstration of the Barnum Effect

 Go over Trait Perspective FIB Notes. We will go over it together using Trait Perspective PowerPoint.  Cattells’ 16 Factors, Eysenck’s Theory of Personality & the Big Five Theory. Go over transparency and watch Psychology: The Human Experience DVD Segment 29 for a review of these trait theories (3:32)  What kinds of traits do Presidents have in common?  If time allows: Rate your favorite TV character using the Big Five scale (handout 11.3). .  Want to do some online personality tests? Go to the following sites and try them out. Report back to us which ones you thought were accurate and which one you thought were not and why. o Myers-Brigg’s Test. www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/Jtypes2.asp - Be sure to read the 2 personality profiles afterwards provided by Butts and Keirsey when you finish the test. o Luscher Colour Test. http://www.colorquiz.com/ Choose colors quickly and see what they reveal about your personality o Eyesenck’s Test and go over results. http://www.trans4mind.com/personality/ This test will show you where you fall on the different aspects of Eyesencks’s personality dimensions. o Keirsey Temperament Sorter at http://keirsey.com/ - You may need to pay for this one so check it out before you jump right in. o Want is your Self-Esteem? Take this quick survey to find out. o What is your Personality Identity? Take this quick survey to find out. IF TIME ALLOWS:  Review of the Major Personality Perspectives – see transparency.  Personality Case Study: Read the case on Handout 11.4 (transparency) and analyze how each of the different personality theories we’ve learned would explain the distress of the person in the case study. Each group will be assigned a theory and explain how that theory would explain the case to the class.

STUDY ON YOUR OWN FOR THE TEST:  READ & STUDY PAGES 486-492. You can also use the Assessing Personality PowerPoint:  Can we really test your personality? What is their purpose?
