Sir Peter Leitch’s Mad Butcher Club AT MT SMART STADIUM, HOME OF THE MIGHTY VODAFONE WARRIORS 20th November 2015 Newsletter #99 Rest Jonah in Lomu Peace 1975 - 2015 O SAY I was shocked to get home to New Zealand to the news that we had lost a good man with the Tpassing of Jonah Lomu is an understatement. I simply could not believe it. Only last week we were tweeting each other about meeting up for lunch. I have had the pleasure of knowing Jonah for many years, and I can not claim to be his best friend, but there was certainly a mutual respect between us. I agree with all of those who have been saying that many Kiwis really did not understand just how big Jonah was. I remember going with the Kiwis to the UK in 2005, and to be frank, wearing black jerseys everywhere, peo- ple often mistook us for rugby players and wanted to talk about Jonah. There were huge billboards with his image on it and you have to remember that big sports companies like adidas like their pound of flesh, so when their playing days are over, many players are quickly discarded. It was never like that for Jonah, the opposite in fact, with adidas using him as a global ambassador for the brand, and for rugby. It has all been said, the gentle giant, the amazing athlete, the humble man – and all of it tis true. He will be sadly missed and I know you will all join me in sending our condolences to his family.

Photos courtesy of www.photosport.co.nz HAT A fantastic time we had at Mt Smart, home of the Vodafone Warriors, on Saturday. WThe team did us proud, putting the Canberra Raiders to the sword, winning 30-8 with Tuimoala Lolo- hea getting a double, but the whole team played well. It was a tremendous way for Jacob Lillyman to celebrate playing his 200th NRL game, and for Bodene Thompson to bring up his century. Unfortunately, because I am hosting the Mad Butcher Club in the Stacey Jones Lounge, I don’t always see as much of the game as I would like, but the payback is meeting fabulous people. Because of health and safety rules, we are only allowed 228 people, so getting in is not always easy, but on Saturday we had people from all over the country, including a group from Wanganui, who were able to attend courtesy of the club, just as a break from their flooding troubles. We must have sung Happy Birthday a half a dozen times. First for Sam Harris, 10, from Christchurch. We made a fuss of him and his father tells me he has not stopped talking about it yet. Then there was the five-year-old son of Bradley King, The Rock Station Manager.

This will be the SUNWOLVES’ second and final Super Rugby home match here in Singapore in the 2019 campaign. The team will be focused on executing a well thought out game plan to rattle and beat an unwavering South African side. The SUNWOLVES arrived in Singapore on Wednesday off the back of a closely fought contest which ended with a victory by the Queensland Reds. They are looking forward to the staunch support from their fans in Singapore to uplift their fighting spirit. The team are optimistic to depart Singapore with a win and will take hope from their last encounter with the LIONS in 2018 where the Johannesburg side snatched a last-minute 40-38 victory. Returning Head Coach Tony Brown, who is back from national duty with Japan, shared his thoughts on the game: “We’ve had a good weeks preparation. Teams worked hard, players have worked hard and now it’s a matter of us just going out there and playing Sunwolves rugby and trying to put the Lions under massive pressure.” The SUNWOLVES and the LIONS teams had their individual Captains Run’s at the National Stadium pitch earlier today to prepare for the upcoming match, and shared their excitement in playing tomorrow’s match in front of an enthusiastic crowd.
