2 Competitive Events

Morning Events

The intent of the morning events is to introduce scouts to games used by Native Alaskans to do this day. This will allow scouts to learn new games, compete in a “Olympic” fashion and to grow teamwork and leadership. The Camp projects are intended for scouts to use their creativity and scout skills to help improve their campsite or the local area of the camporee.

There is flexibility in the morning schedule so that patrols can avoid standing around for an event to open up. The morning events must be done as a patrol. Some patrols may choose to begin at the first event, middle, or even last event and work their way around the rotation of events.

Each patrol must complete the morning events as a group. The patrol flag must accompany them to each event and patrols will give their patrol yell at each event.. The flag may be laid aside at each event, and each event station is a safe place.

One Foot High Kick: TIMED EVENT: Scouts will get one practice and three tries in kicking a ball suspended from a string. The ball is hung at about 8 feet off the ground. The scout will kick with, and land on the ground with the same foot. One Arm Reach: TIMED EVENT: Scouts will get one practice and three tries in reaching a suspended object using one hand, while the other hand remains on the ground, the ball will be hung from 6 feet off the ground. Stick Wrist Carry: TO BE SCORED BY DISTANCE: Scouts will be given one attempt (no practice) and will be judged on distance. Scouts will be carried using their wrists to suspend themselves on a stick while two other scouts carry them up to 50 feet.

Kneeling Jump: TO BE SCORED BY DISTANCE: Scouts will be given one practice and one attempt. Scouts will start off on their knees and from that position jump for distance landing on their feet only.

Scissor Broad Jump:

3 Timed Event: Scouts will be given one practice and one attempt. Scouts will start from a central start point and be scored on distance? The scouts will be shown how to do the jump, and must replicate it for this event.

Seal Hop: TIMED EVENT: This is a patrol event where the patrol will compete at the same time for best distance in a given amount of time (25 ft. cap)

Eskimo Yo-Yo: TIMED EVENT: Patrols may bring their own Eskimo Yo-Yo’s or borrow a Boy Scout version at the camp. Each scout will be given three attempts, best attempt counts for each scout (two minute cap)

Patrols Should Bring

A Measuring Tape

Stop Watch (one per patrol)

Eskimo Yo-Yo’s (assembled if available)

8 ft segment of rope

If your patrol should wish to research and practice the games ahead of time the link to the games is: http://www.weio.org/the_games.php

4 Troop or Patrol Project. Each troop shall spend the afternoon building a project using knots and lashings. For judging purposes, Scouts must be able to correctly identify all knots and/or lashings on their project.

Upon completion, the patrol/troop must label each of their gadgets with the following information on an index card:  Troop/Patrol name  SPL/Patrol Leader’s name  Names of boys who assisted in building the structure/gadget  Knots/Lashings used on the structure/gadget

Structures will be evaluated at the beginning of the afternoon event session. Structures will be evaluated on the basis of:  Appearance, neatness of lashing  Correctness of lashing  Strength of the structure (sufficient for intended purpose)  Originality
