Sat., Sept. 25th 8:00a.m. – 12:00p.m. New Hope Baptist Church’s Human Services Ministry is sponsoring a community Health and Human Service Fair. Tues., Sept.28th 8:30a.m. – 4:30p.m. The Battered Women’s Project, the National Lawyers Guild and American Bar Association Commission on Domestic Violence. Sponsoring a presentation. Presenters will be Patricia Castillo of the P.E.A.C.E. Initiative, Lee Teran of the St. Mary’s Law School, and Clemencia Prieto of the SAPD Victim’s Advocacy Section and Deborah Caballero - Parrott of the Bexar County District Attorney’s Family Justice and Victim Protection Division. Thurs., Sept. 30th 5:00p.m. - 7:00p.m. STOP ABUSE START RESPECT Join us in opening October 1999 National Domestic Violence Awareness Month at Woodlawn Lake. The event will consist of, musical performances, and an interpretive dance by students from Incarnate Word University, a choir performance, and information booths on community services. The evening will close with a memorial service, calling to mind the women who have died at the hands of a partner and our need to continue working to end family violence. Sat., Oct 23, 6:30p.m. – 8:30p.m. - Silent Witness Display and Memorial Service The Silent Witnesses are a collection of life sized red wooden figures that represent more than 150 Texas women murdered in domestic violence situations in 1994. Each woman’s name and story of her death are permanently affixed to the chest of the Silent Witness in memory of her life and as a reminder of the deadly effects of domestic violence. This event will explore the connections between violence perpetrated towards animals and how it relates to violence perpetrated against people. A collaboration between Community First Health Plans, Clockwork Design, the San Antonio Express News and the P.E.A.C.E. Initiative will be producing a full-page ad in the Express News to draw attention to domestic violence in San Antonio. Community First Health Plans will then turn the ad into a poster and have it distributed all over San Antonio and south Texas. A Women’s support group for Victims of Domestic Violence 7:00p.m. – 8:30p.m. Every Tuesday held at the First Presbyterian Church New Convent Building, 404 N. Alamo. Free Parking and the entrance cost is free. This group is sponsored by the San Antonio Police Department, Victims Advocacy Section. For more information please call 207-2180.
