Configuring IIS / FTP on Windows XP Pro

This document is a compliment to Application Note #00037 “Installing IIS/FTP on Windows XP Pro” and will walk you through configuring an FTP site along with explaining how to add a user and set permissions. More information can be found at Microsoft’s Website: www.microsoft.com.

This document assumes that you have no firewall software installed on your system. If you do have a firewall please disable it before continuing with this walkthrough

Accessing/Configuring IIS for an FTP Site  From the Control Panel, double-click “Administrative Tools”, the following window will appear:

 Find “Internet Information Services” and double-click it.  Right-click on the “Default FTP Site” and select “Properties”  On the Default FTP Site Properties window:

o Give your FTP Site a name for easier reference. o Assign a TCP Port to the FTP Site (Default is 21) o Change your connection limits if you need to o Enable or Disable Logging

 Click on “Security Accounts”

o On the Security Accounts tab you will see a section that says “Allow Anonymous Connections” . If you do not want to allow anonymous connections please uncheck this box.  After you have set this click on the “Home Directory” tab:

 On this tab you need to ensure that your Home Directory is set. The Home Directory is the first directory that users are put into when they connect to the FTP site. o You will need to set permissions on the home directory; we will cover this at the end of the document.  Also on this tab be sure that you set the attributes that you want your FTP site to have. If you need read, write and logging enabled, enable it here.  Click on OK when you are done. o You may close the Internet Information Services window Creating Users This section talks about creating users for your newly created FTP site. Again, this document is only intended for those running Windows XP Professional Edition.

 Go into your Control Panel from the Start Menu in Windows XP

 If you see the window above click on the link in the upper left-hand corner of the screen that says “Switch to Classic View”  Your windows should change to something resembling the following:

 From this windows double-click on “User Accounts”

 Click the “Add” button once the User Accounts window appears  Once the “Add New User” window appears assign a username to this new user and add the domain if applicable. In this example we will use the new user “TEST”  Click “Next”

 Select the type of user you want to add. In order to add more types of users you need to add “Groups”. o Assistance in setting up Groups can be found at www.microsoft.com  Once you have selected the User Type click “Finish” Setting User/Directory Permissions This section will walk you through setting permissions for your FTP folder. This is not accomplished by going through IIS, but rather by setting the permissions on the folder you are using for your FTP site.

In our examples our FTP site was created at: C:\TEMP so we will be using that directory for all further references.

 Open “My Computer” and open your Local Disk (Normally Drive C:)

 Click “Show the contents of this folder” if you get this screen. You should see the following window appear  Right-click on the Folder you want to edit (in this example we are looking for the TEMP folder)  Click on “Sharing and Security” or “Properties” and select the “Security” tab.  In order to allow a user access to the directory you will need to click “Add”

 When the “Select Users, Computers, or Groups” window appears click on the “Advanced” button. o This will expand the window into the following:

 Click “Find Now” to display a list of users.  Find your new user “TEST” and click OK.  Click OK one more time to add the new user to the list.  Once you get to the TEMP Properties screen and see your new user you need to select the appropriate permissions. For this example please select “Full Control” since we want our new user to be able to both read and write to the FTP site.  When you are finished click “OK”

Summary After going through this document you should be able to configure and access your FTP site, create new users and set permissions for said users. Please refer to www.microsoft.com for any further information needed on these services.
