Organization Description: Missouri Disabled Water Ski Association (MDWSA) was established as a nonprofit public benefit charitable organization for improving the lives of children and adults with physical and developmental disabilities, visual impairments, and special needs by involvement in adaptive water skiing. MDWSA is an all-volunteer organization and was founded with the vision and understanding that a professionally organized program of adaptive water skiing and disabled sports for children and adults with disabilities will energize them beyond their rehabilitation and encourage them to maintain a healthy, active, and well-balanced lifestyle.

MDWSA continues the 35+ year tradition of organizing and participating in the Annual New Years Day Polar Bear Water Ski to create a greater community awareness of disability sport, to focus attention on the needs of the disabled athlete, to raise money for specialized adaptive water ski equipment and Learn to Water Ski Clinics. Water is the great equalizer when it comes to dealing with a disability. All of the wheelchairs, canes, and crutches are left on the shore and everyone on the water is equal. Adaptive Water Skiing, along with many other wheelchair and disabled sports, play an important role in the reintegration process of the person with a disability. It provides them with an opportunity to be active again or maybe active for the very first time in their lives.

Community Description and Population Served: Missouri Disabled Water Ski Association (MDWSA) serves children & adults with disabilities between in the St. Louis Region who are frequently overlooked, underserved, and oftentimes forgotten when considering the development of their independence, self-confidence, and physical mobility. Populations include those with developmental disabilities, sensory disabilities, and physical disabilities such as amputation, paralysis, cerebral palsy, polio, multiple sclerosis, Spina Bifida, muscular dystrophy, acquired brain injury, and other neuromuscular disorders and orthopedic complications.

Program Overview: Missouri Disabled Water Ski Association (MDWSA) introduces the sport of adaptive water skiing to children and adults with physical and developmental disabilities, visual impairments, and special needs through Learn to Water Ski Clinics that are sanctioned by USA Water Ski. The program teaches the fundamentals of water skiing to the disabled individual using specially designed equipment and adaptations, along with teaching techniques modified for the disabled skier. The teaching principles and techniques are based on those accepted as “best practices” by USA Water Ski. All instructors, boat drivers, and water safety personnel are USA Water Ski certified. During Learn to Water Ski Clinics, participants with disabilities improve their overall self-confidence, develop new friendships, enhance their social skills, and strengthen their physical development and fitness. In most instances, water skiers are required to be one year post-injury, and the participants must not have any pressure sores that will be contraindicated by contact with the water.

The goals of MDWSA are as follows: 1. To organize, promote and provide recreational and competitive water skiing opportunities for disabled children and adults for the betterment of adaptive water skiing and the disabled athlete. 2. To strengthen the physical, spiritual and social well-being of disabled children and adults through disability sport and adaptive water skiing while enhancing their independence, self-reliance and self-esteem. 3. To educate the public about disability sport and adaptive water skiing in order to create a greater understanding of the needs of children and adults with disabilities.

The objectives of MDWSA are as follows: 1. To expand its reach and effectiveness through a program of water skiing for anyone with a disability; 2. To work in collaboration with organizations in the region that work with children and adults with disabilities; 3. To create a regional showcase for adaptive water ski opportunities for both the recreational and competitive water skier, and elevate standards of accessibility and inclusion at area waterways; 4. To be attractive to corporate sponsors, foundations, and the community as a whole.
