Thursday, 7 July 2011 Working with Men facing Disability & Chronic illness. Understand and gain knowledge in working with men who face major change through disability and illness. Draw on the experience of one of the facilitators who himself has had to learn to live with a disability.

Friday, 8 July (Day 3) Tai Chi for the Aged. Reinforce and enhance your learning from workshops conducted February and March 2011. N.B. A few new starters can be accommodated.

Tuesday, 12 July (Day 1) Evening First Aid Refresher. Run over 2 evenings for first time participants and those updating their skills.

Tuesday, 26 July Continence in the Community. Learn how to talk about continence in a sensitive manner and gain some practical strategies for working with clients who have continence issues.

Wed. 7 September. Recognise, Respond in Situations of Elder Abuse (WS1) An introductory workshop to help you understand what constitutes abuse of older people and what you can and should do about it.

Thursday, 15 September. Safe Driving. Gain knowledge and practical experience in safe driving techniques, cargo stowage and an awareness of potential risks when providing a door-to- door service. Tuesday, 20 September. Care Planning & Goal Setting. Case Managers, Assessment & Allied Health staff - learn the process of "paper to practice" strategies required to achieve person centred care.

Wed. 28 September Managing Challenging Client Behaviours. Case Managers, Assessment Officers and other “lead staff” – review and discuss current techniques, consider alternative and innovative approaches towards effective client behaviour management.

Thursday, 6 October. Recognise, Respond & Assess Situations of Elder Abuse. (WS2) For those who have a responsibility to formally respond to concerns of suspected elder abuse. Participants must have completed W/shop WS1.

Monday, 10 October Emotional First Aid. Develop strategies to support clients adjusting to different life challenges – loss of function, bereavement or depression.

Wednesday. 12 October. Autism Spectrum Disorder Communication and Social Skills. Open to those who have attended an Introduction to ASD workshop or had other ASD education. This is an excellent opportunity to expand your ASD knowledge and communicate better with your ASD clients.

Wednesday, 12 October. Water for Well Being. Learn to understand the importance of adequate fluid intake among the frail elderly and identify strategies to promote adequate fluid intake.

Wednesday, 19 October. Using Art in Programs. Work with an artist who will lead you through the basic steps of working creatively with clients to help them develop skills and have fun.

Thursday, 20 October. What about the Carers. Practical strategies for busy workers to help them explore what’s going on for carers, what carers want from service providers, and why it is important to support the carer.

Thursday, 24 November. Working with People who have a Brain Injury or Illness. Gain an overview of brain injuries and illnesses and their impact.

Monday, 28 November. Putting the Active Service Model into Practice. (WS2) Once you have attended WS1 you will learn the practice skills relating to the active service model in this workshop. It is expected that participants in WS2 will already have the introductory knowledge about ASM principles and core concepts.

Tuesday, 29 Nov. (Day 2) Personal Care Skills Professional Development. Continuation of workshop commenced 15 November 2011.

Workshop Description: The aim of the session is to increase general knowledge of dementia, including effective communication with a person with dementia and dealing with behaviours of concern.

Target audience and prerequisites: Suitable for HACC workers and volunteers who provide direct care service to clients No prior knowledge or skills required

Expected outcomes: On completion of this session, it is anticipated that participants will have gained a basic understanding of:  The nature of dementia;  Effective communication;  The problem solving approach to address behaviours of concern. Performance Criteria:

 On completion of this information, it is anticipated that participants will be able to:  Identify the five symptoms of dementia;  Identify six different types of dementia;  Implement strategies for communicating effectively with persons with dementia;  Acknowledge that changes in behaviour are linked to damage to particular areas of the brain and that this damage varies between individuals;  Be able to understand the Problem Solving Approach in dealing with behaviours of concern in people with dementia.

TAI CHI FOR THE AGED Especially adapted from Taiji Qigong Shibashi Fridays, 8 July and 12 August 12.30 pm -4.00 pm

Workshop Description:

This is part 3 of a 4 part program which began in February 2011; however a few new starters can be accommodated. Taiji Qigong Shibashi Is a form of Qigong based on the simplified movements of Tai Chi and which has 18 movements. Also known as Shibashi, it is fast becoming a popular soft and gentle wellness exercise. It is generally performed standing but is very adaptable and may be easily modified to be performed seated.

Qigong Principles:

The principles of the form are based on Traditional Chinese Medical theory which aims to harmonise the flow vital energy (Qi) in the body and promote circulation by dredging out blockages or stagnant energy. These movements are ideal for elderly clients and people who require a low impact wellness exercise.

Target audience and prerequisites: This workshop is suitable for all HACC staff. No previous skills or knowledge required Wear comfortable clothing that will not restrict your movements.

Expected outcomes: You will learn how to adapt certain Tai Chi movements for incorporation into a gentle exercise program for your clients.

Workshop Description: This workshop presents tools to use when clients share personal dilemmas outside the worker’s usual task focus. It explores how to provide assistance to the client, within the work role and also how to take care of ourselves during and after dealing with emotionally laden situations. It explores how to use listening and responding skills to support the client without taking on an "official" counselling role.

Workshop Description: This is an introductory workshop about Elder Abuse. The training will be largely activity based including videos and discussions, case studies and group work. Workshop description: This three hour workshop presents the principles and core concepts as well as the skills needed to implement the Active Service Model. This training provides an opportunity for participants to explore their initial reactions to the Active Service Model – to voice endorsement and problem solve any concerns relating to their work role. This learning workshop has an important role in generating new ideas, enthusiasm and better understanding of the benefits of the Active Service Model.

Target audience:  Direct Support Workers  Rostering, Reception and Support Staff

The focus of this workshop is the practice skills relating to the Active Service Model. It is expected that participants would already have introductory knowledge about the Active Service Model principles and core concepts prior to attending.
