A RESOLUTION Adjourning the Senate in Honor of the 1981 Kentucky State University Thorobrettes

A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in honor of the 1981 Kentucky State University Thorobrettes Women's Basketball Team. WHEREAS, the Kentucky State University Thorobrettes Women's Basketball Team were the champions of the inaugural National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Women's Basketball National Championship in 1981; and WHEREAS, the Thorobrettes were the first women's basketball team to win a national championship sponsored by a non-women-centric organization; and WHEREAS, the seventh-seeded Thorobrettes defeated top-seeded Texas Southern University 73-67 in the title game; and WHEREAS, All-American Carolyn Walker was named Most Valuable Player of the Tournament and First-Team All Tournament; and WHEREAS, Angelia Barnett and Pam King were named Second-Team All Tournament; and WHEREAS, Coach Cornieth "C.Y." York Russell and Coach Ron Mitchell led the team to a 21-7 record; and WHEREAS, Coach Ron Mitchell was named the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Coach of the Year after compiling an 11-0 record; and WHEREAS, Kentucky State University is the only Historically Black College and University to win the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Women's

Basketball National Championship; and WHEREAS, the Thorobrettes were the first women's basketball team in the Commonwealth of Kentucky to win a national championship; NOW, THEREFORE, Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The Senate does hereby honor and congratulate the 1981 Kentucky State University Women's Basketball Team for its achievements as the first women's

basketball team in the Commonwealth to win a national championship and as the only Historically Black College and University to win the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Women's Basketball Championship.

Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor of the 1981 Kentucky State University Women's Basketball Team.

Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit twenty copies of this Resolution to Senator Julian M. Carroll, 702 Capitol Avenue, Annex Room 229, Frankfort, Kentucky 40601.
