Role Title: Product Owner
BTL successfully supplies the largest and most prestigious Awarding Bodies in the country with its high- end software solution “Surpass” which delivers millions of exams each year. Our technology provides our customers with intuitive assessment software for both onscreen and paper delivery and draws on over 30 years’ worth of experience in the industry. Now BTL has launched a much lower cost SaaS solution and has ambitious worldwide sales plans.
Purpose
The Product Owner is a critical role at BTL and will have overall accountability for the development of some of BTL’s key products. The Product Owner is required to closely collaborate with the product team on an ongoing basis and to guide and direct the development teams. The Product Owner will intimately understand BTL’s customers and potential customers as well as the broader industry. The successful candidate will have at least 1 years’ commercial experience in a Product Owner role. The main activities of the Product Owner role are to: Develop a deep understanding of customer / stakeholder needs Work across all areas of the business to identify and clarify ideas for product enhancement Evaluate the business value of product enhancements Liaise with stakeholders including sponsors, customers, partners and the projects team Provide regular reporting including product spend, scope, schedule and planning Provide customers with regular information on development progress Calculate financial investment in the product Manage and maintain ideas management Work closely with the Design team to promote the user experience when developing changes Champion new feature enhancements to the business Maintain a basic knowledge of software development principles Some UK and international travel may be required.
Key Accountabilities
Product vision and working with the product team to provide clear vision, direction and backlog prioritisation of the Product Backlog management attend all required Scrum meetings (Sprint Planning, Product Backlog Grooming, Sprint Review) provide the team feedback on their performance at the end of each sprint. Product ROI ensure product development investments are spent in a way that maximises BTL’s return on investment while minimising business risk for customer funded change, determine the profitability of each product feature based on the cost to develop versus the forecast revenue hold the team accountable to their commitments and to the money spent on developing features. Customer provide the team with clear information on BTL customers and potential satisfaction customers including how they use the product, why they use the product, who uses it, when they use it and with whom establish open lines of communication with customers in order to bridge the relationship between BTL product development and BTL customers ensure BTL is developing products that exceed customer expectations. Product Roadmap work with the Product team in grooming the product roadmap to deliver the agreed product(s) in line with BTL’s business strategy communicate the roadmap and technology vision with the team(s).
Stakeholder provide the team with clear information on the internal/external Management stakeholder requirements. establish open lines of communication with internal/external stakeholders.
Documentation, work with Technical Authors and Trainers to ensure documentation and Training and training materials are produced accurately Support work with the Product team to ensure changes that may impact other products are fully considered and planned ensure that any agreed product outputs where other external services or products may be reliant, are maintained and controlled carefully (e.g. externally integrated systems, API’s etc). Requirements work with Business Analysts where necessary to gather customer gathering requirements into agreed specifications work with Solution and Technical Architects to provide accurate cost estimates, prices or development sizes to customers/stakeholders for requested changes.

Experience working with cross functional teams Strong communication skills (listening, written and oral) and presentation skills Strong analytical and commercial acumen Able to understand complex business requirements, transferring them into clear instruction for both technical and non-technical audiences Taking ownership of the end result of each Sprint and ensuring success, through a focus on SCRUM objectives Personable, confident and hardworking, with excellent organisational communication skills Capable of dealing with high pressure situations Must have attention to detail, and ability to set and manage priorities judiciously Experience in software product development Good understanding of business finance including the ability to write business cases, determine ROI, NPV and cash-flows Demonstrable knowledge of software development lifecycles and activities A strong understanding of software Agile methodologies, particularly Scrum A clear ability to manage a range of different personality types in a facilitative and mature manner Strong relationship building skills including the ability to relate constructively to all levels of the organisation A proven ability to plan, undertake and finish activities to achieve high-quality results The desire to be part of, and contribute to, a team environment Demonstrate commitment to keeping sensitive information confidential Ability to articulate ideas to both technical and non-technical addressees Exceptionally self-motivated and directed Experience with Product Management, e-assessment domain and/or Awarding Body domain advantageous.
