Purpose This unit standard is for people who wish to enter or are employed in the motor industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to select exhaust components for the job, remove and inspect existing exhaust system, and repair and/or replace exhaust system.

Outcome 1

Select exhaust components for the job.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Exhaust components to be replaced are identified according to vehicle and/or machine details.

Range may include but is not limited to – vehicle and/or machine details (make, model, year, chassis or VIN number, engine number import or locally assembled), in a parts catalogue or computer, according to customer’s or supervisor’s instructions, sample matching.

1.2 Availability of replacement exhaust system components is determined.

Range may include but is not limited to – from company’s stock, ordering components from a supplier; meeting legislative requirements.

Outcome 2

Remove and inspect existing exhaust system.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Exhaust system components are removed from the vehicle and/or machine without damage to adjacent components.

Range two of – hand cutting, oxy-acetylene cutting, heating, dismantling joints.

Evidence requirements

3.1 Corroded parts are identified, and are replaced and/or repaired.

Range may include but is not limited to – pipes, mufflers, catalytic converter, mountings.

3.2 Exhaust components are fitted to the vehicle and/or machine.

Range may include but is not limited to – aligning complete system with underbody and ground clearances, fitting gaskets, clamps, hangers, heat shielding, bolts, and studs, all joints sealed, ensuring noise output meets legislative requirements, sensors, gas welding, MIG welding.

3.3 The exhaust system is mounted in a secure and flexible manner and meets legislative requirements.

Range may include but is not limited to – ensuring system is not bound up, all components located in the intended position, no rattles and vibration transmitted by the system, no exhaust leaks, exhaust gases directed away from the perimeter of the vehicle’s passenger compartment.
