Frozen Section Responsibilities

Common Frozen Section Responsibilities:

Call Hospital Operator (x83111) and make sure your correct contact number(s) are listed

On Weekend calls, touch base with attending(s) on call (also do the on-call check list)

Check with Hot Seat before you leave for any after hour (after 5PM) Rush cases since you as the Frozen resident are on-call after 5 pm Mon.- Friday morning.

Call OR before you leave to find out about any add-on cases for the next day or weekend Frozens for Saturday or Sunday when On call.

Go through next days’ OR list - ask Frank to pull all relevant previous slides for next day’s tentative Frozen case - Highlight next day’s Frozen cases on the OR sheet - When no longer used, label each of the pulled cases with a service it belonges to ( a sticky on top works perfectly) so these slides would not be refiled and pulled once again for sign out. Head neck cases are different: file all previous FNAs etc on the shelf above the EHN scope.

Familiarize yourself with our Grossing protocols (See Yale Surg Path Grossing manual and when not sure always ask the Frozen attending on service)

Keep the Frozen grossing area organized and clean (To minimize contamination, clean your grossing tools in between Frozen cases).

Use the Frozen forms in The Frozen area for each specimen (e.g. Uterus Form, etc.).

Learn how to turn on the Camera and to operate it

Make sure Scopecam is working for nights and weekends

Learn how to run Navicare for active OR cases (Log into Navicare through the blue icon; not the yellow icon)

Learn how to run FSLink software. Neil will give you a tutorial on your first day.

Know how to cut frozens by yourself if needed be and be familiar with its basic operations and maintenance (e.g. changing the cutting blade, etc.): Ask Mel or Ken for a tutorial

Don’t forget to time stamp the frozen sheets

When made aware of a frozen case, make sure to ask someone to alert the histotech on frozen ASAP.

Be familiar with Accessioning specimens (you may be required to accession specimens after hours and sometimes on weekends). You can find the “How to Accession” guidelines at the hot seat area.

You can contact the Chief resident if there are any other questions or concerns.
