DENTON ISD CHORAL MUSIC CURRICULUM Course Title: Grade 6, Choir (end of course)

Strand Content/Process Perception . Students will read music in the treble and bass clef and identify characteristic timbres. . Students will learn literature that is usually limited to the use of whole, half, quarter, eighth notes, corresponding rests, dotted quarter and dotted half notes. . Students will sing a major scale and basic intervals of the I, IV, & V chord using solfege and Curwen hand signs. . Students will recognize melodic and rhythmic patterns. . Students will understand the significance of key and time signatures and have exposure to: . Major key signatures: C, F, & G. . Time signatures: 4/4, 3/4, 2/4 Creative Expression/ . Students may be assigned to classes for treble voice, changing Performance male voice, or mixed voices in order to address special needs in vocal development. . Students will refine vocal production skills including: . Posture . Breath support . Vowel formation . Use and care of the voice . Students will work with: . Scales and arpeggios . Melodic and rhythmic patterns . Expansion of the range . Students will perform literature selections in unison, two, and three parts that enhance their sight-singing skills. . Student’s awareness and accuracy of diction will be increased by singing literature in a language other than English. . Students will utilize solfege and hand signs to: . Work melodic patterns and sequences . Sing unison and two-part material . Students may have the option of enhancing individual singing skills by participating in solo/ensemble contests, and other similar events. Historical/Cultural . Students will study the historical and cultural contexts of their Heritage listening and performance literature. . Students will learn the origins of traditional materials, their time frames and composers and listen to exemplary models. Response/Evaluation . Students will begin establishing and using criteria for music performance evaluation. . Students will develop and demonstrate acceptable rehearsal and concert etiquette. . Teacher will model exemplary vocal and conducting technique in order to develop exemplary music habits in the student. REVISED: 8/17/10
