Module Storytime

Unit Adventures

Programme Outline

A magic key, accidentally obtained by the children in this programme, opens the door of excitement and unbelievable adventures to the children and the audience. The magic key takes the main characters, Biff, Kipper, Chip and their grandmother to a huge and mysterious castle where three beautiful but cunning witches reside. The King of the castle has been changed into a frog by the witches and now lives as a prisoner in the castle. Seeing the suffering of the King, the children and their grandmother are determined to save him from his misery. Grandmother turns out to be the bravest. She leads the children to fight against evil and captures the three witches at the end.

When watching the programme, the pupils are invited by the narrator to make predictions and respond to events in the story. The are also invited to exercise their imagination by inventing their own adventures in other settings like a pirate ship and the forest at the end of the programme.

Communicative Functions 1. Draw attention to people and things and describe them briefly Examples: One was a black witch. One was a red witch.

2. Give a simple account of things that have happened and things that people did in the past Examples: Chip picked up the box. He ran into Biff’s room.

Chip picked up the key. They looked at the magic house.

The witch opened the door. Gran pushed the witch. Chip took the witch’s keys.

3. Ask for and give explanations Examples: Who lived in this castle? The King and Queen? The Prince and Princess? No. Three witches!

Do you know which witch it is? Is it the red witch? Or is it the green witch? It is the red witch.

Pre-viewing Activities 1. Give out the first two pages of the Story Section and the COPYMASTER 1 to the pupils before watching the programme. Ask the pupils to look at the pictures carefully and then read the questions in Part I of the worksheet. Pupils do not need to write down the answers Try to elicit as many oral answers to these questions as possible so as to encourage pupils to develop their prediction and imagination skills.

3 Possible answers: 1. Three witches. 2. Ask pupils to suggest as many places as possible. 3. One possible answer is that the magic key and magic house will take them to new and strange places. Ask pupils to think of their favourite adventures as answers. 4. Witches, monsters, dragons, old men or women, a family, etc. Encourage pupils to use their imagination. There are many possible answers.

4. Introduce the following vocabulary/expressions to the class if necessary: adventures, exciting, happen, glowing, magic, castle, nasty witches, yelled, pushed, threw, pirate ship and forest.

While-viewing Activities Make sure that the pupils have the COPYMASTER 1 and pencils on their desks while they are viewing the programme. They have to complete Part II of the worksheet which checks the pupils’ comprehension of the programme.

Post-viewing Activities 1. Pupils complete Part B of Part II on the COPYMASTER 1, Pupils need to write in complete sentences how Gran caught the three witches. Answers: a) Gran pushed the black witch and locked the door. b) Gran put a net over the red witch. c) Gran threw the green witch on floor.

2. Teachers give out COPYMASTERs 2 & 3 to the pupils. In Part III, pupils are encouraged to exercise their imagination and write their own adventure story. Explain to the pupils the situation they are put in and ask them to choose either (1) or (2) and then fill in the blank in No. 1. Go through the questions with them in No. 2 and give them one example to the list, for example, a dragon.

3. In No. 3, pupils are encouraged to use their imagination to describe what happened to them in their adventure. For example, if they saw a dragon in the forest, what was the dragon doing? Did they make friends with the dragon or did they run away? Remind them to use past tense in their answers to describe past actions. Pupils may have many different answers. Possible answers:

4 a) I fought with the dragon. b) I walked around the forest. c) I learned how to shoot in the forest.

5 4. In No. 4, pupils are asked to link up what they saw and did with the end of the story. They could have many different possible answers. After they have completed the answers, they can present their answer orally to the whole class.
