State the Learning Objective for the Lesson
Essay Submission: The student will assume the role of a living creature - the mosquito. The writers (students) will do research on mosquitoes to learn new facts about their new role. The writer will compose a 10 day dairy from the point of view of a mosquito. Each entry must contain a reference to a newly learned fact and some entries should include humor.
Describe Your Focus Activity and how you will state the objective to the students.
Essay Submission: The teacher will share the book "Dairy Of A Worm" with the students. We will see how the author, Doreen Cronin, conveys real life facts about an invertebrate (worm) in a new and interesting format which is the worm's dairy. Tell the studnets they will be writing their own unlikely diaries. They will become mosquitoes since we are studying mosquitoes in science.
How will you provide the Explanation and how will you Check Mastery?
Essay Submission: The teacher will read aloud and show the group a "Mosquito Diary" that was created by another student from last year. The teacher will prompt the students to talk about the "voice" used in the diary and the "voice" used in the "Diary of a Worm". The teacher will also direct the students to notice the cover of the diary and the inside. The teacher will show the interesting facts based on realistic fiction used in the model plus the dates on each page modeled after the book that was read. The illustration of each entry will also be shown to the students.
What Guided Practice activities will you use and how will you Check for Mastery?
Essay Submission: The student writers will take out their plan page given to them and their Mosquito fact sheet. The students, along with the teacher will record interesting facts about the mosquito on their own plan sheet as the teacher records them on hers.The students will then create a realist fiction event that happens to the mosquito each day for ten days based on this fact. The teacher will give examples she would put in her dairy plan page while receiving additional ideas from the students.
What Independent Practice will you use and how will you Asses Mastery?
Essay Submission: The student writers will produce their own "Dairy of a Mosquito" in book form. The students will be expected to create a cover for their "book". Written by and illustrated by should be included on the cover like the model shown to them. Each daily entry should be dated and include a mosquito fact along with humor from their fact plan sheet. Each page should be illustrated. Mastery will be assessed based on the facts listed in their own Mosquito Diary in addition to the diary format being followed.
How will you conduct closure to the lesson?
Essay Submission: The teacher will conduct closure to the lesson by asking the students to share what they learned about mosquitoes and the diary writing process from this exercise. There should be two different areas learned: that of the diary writing process and that of the habits, characteristics and life of a mosquito to fulfill the science TEK.
