Deforestation causes many varieties of issues on the environment. Biodiversity loss and extinction are significant issues occurring from deforestation. Deforestation also affects the water, air, and weather. Floods have become more difficult to predict and also more frequent.

Landslides and soil erosion are very common aftermaths of deforestation. When so much deforestation happens, the effects may be irreversible.

Deforestation has positive reasons for happening, but the effects can be considered detrimental. Living conditions for all become greatly compromised after years of deforestation.

Necessities such as water and air are tampered with when too much forestry is lost. With reasons such as these, these effects of deforestation can hurt humans in the long run. After a while, it will get to a point where all negative effects will be irreversible and living will be a more difficult thing to do.

Deforestation is a necessary evil for many people to survive. Many people depend on the forest to make money by farming, especially those in developing countries. Limiting deforestation would greatly impact those in these said countries. The economies of many places depend on the clearing of many forests in order to make money on not only timber, but also agriculture. Also, it is popular belief that limiting deforestation could worsen the economy of developing countries, but help the economy of developed countries.

This newspaper article is helpful because it shares a farmer’s point of view of deforestation. Although deforestation is not necessarily a positive aspect for the environment, it is necessary for an economy to be well off. It is literally economically rational for deforestation to occur.

Deforestation is not just the random cutting down of forest for industry and agriculture. It also involves a great deal of burning forests. This causes carbon dioxide to be released into the atmosphere and create the greenhouse effect. Deforestation gives off almost as much carbon dioxide as industry alone does. The act of burning down the forests is used because it is easier and faster than using chains and bulldozers. However, the reasons are the same for this type of deforestation – pastureland, farmland, and large-scale agriculture. This is a helpful source because it brings light onto a different type of deforestation that

occurs in the world. Many people believe deforestation is only cutting down trees. This is not

always the case. Burning down trees also occurs and even has a greater environmental impact.

This source also focuses on the affects in the tropics, which is becoming a bigger issue with

deforestation now. This article also gives insight into solutions and alternatives for deforestation.

Kates, Robert. "Global Warming: Are Environmentalists Part of the Problem?" Environment

49.1 (2007): par. 1-5. Research Library Core, ProQuest. Web. 5 Nov. 2009.

Environmentalists may be a root of a problem of global warming. They are often times

opposing projects that could limit greenhouse gas emissions. Even environmentalists encourage

deforestation by requesting biodiesel. Also, they encourage deforestation with palm oil

plantations. Opposing alternatives requires deforestation to continue to occur in the world.

In order for change to happen, some negative aspects are required. Concerns for certain

parts of the environment cause lack of conservation resolutions. Deforestation is just one concern

of a large scale of issues that may contribute to the theory of global warming. Even extremists,

the environmentalists, encourage some instances for deforestation. This argument shows that

deforestation is necessary and cannot be ended.

Deforestation was an occurrence from the early times of humans even until now.

However, it was never considered an emergency before. When considering deforestation, many people miss the facts of the instances of deforestation in the past. Today, people often consider deforestation to only be an issue for recent times. However, this is not the case; deforestation has always occurred since the beginning of humans.

This scholarly book review of Deforesting the Earth is very helpful because it points out that deforestation occurred in all points in times of the existence of humans. The emergency of the current state of deforestation may be completely exaggerated by many people. The earth has lasted thousands of years with deforestation constantly happening, and it has not been an issue before.

Deforestation is an extreme case that is responsible for a lot of the excess of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Forests store almost half of terrestrial carbon. Most deforestation occurs in tropical regions, especially developing countries. There are several programs that are proposed in the legislation that supports reducing deforestation. However, there are many positives and negatives to these programs. Some countries take advantage of the reforestation to make profits, but neglecting them might ruin potential for any reforestation of large newly deforested areas.

This article shows the governmental actions being taken against deforestation. It shows the negative aspects of deforestation, but is realistic about how it could be resolved. Obvious solutions are recognized, but also analyzed to see how well they would work. Restoration is a possibility for reversing deforestation. However, they proposed a conservation act and projects that should go along with it, also.
