Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee (BPAC) Minutes 5:30 pm to 6:30 am Glenview Middle School Library 3100 7th Street, East Moline, IL 61244 Guest presenters: Marceia Duhm, Black Hawk College; Chris Lopez, Moline School District;

There were 5 parents in attendance, 6 ELL teachers, and LaVonne Peterson, Associate Superintendent and Director of the ELL Program. Vinyon Amouzouri, French translator, was also in attendance. LaVonne introduced the ELL staff and presenters. LaVonne reviewed the purpose of the meeting and previewed the agenda.

LaVonne reported that we have a group of 6 parents attending the 6th Annual Bilingual Parent Summit on May 7, 2011 at Oak Brook, Il. The District will provide transportation. There will be no cost to parents at all.

Marceia Duhm, Black Hawk College, presented on the Digital Divas program, which is a summer program provided by Black Hawk College for girls finishing 8th to 12th grade. The program is limited to 30 girls. Applications were distributed. Margarita Mojica translated.

Following the whole group presentations, breakout sessions for Spanish speakers and non-Spanish speakers began.

Breakout Session 1: Chris Lopez, Dean of Students at Moline HS, presented a PPT on cyber bullying and internet safety to Spanish speaking parents. The PPT was in English and Spanish. Mr. Lopez’s Assistant translated.

In a concurrent session in a computer lab, non-Spanish speaking parents heard a presentation from LaVonne Peterson on how to interpret ACCESS scores. Krista Bruder assisted. Vinyon Amouzouri translated. Breakout Session 2: Parents swapped rooms and the sessions were repeated. Felipe Hernandez did the presentation to Spanish speakers on interpreting ACCESS results.

The meeting adjourned at 6:45
